Possible Strategies
  • Regrouping
  • Adding onto the smaller number
  • Using place value
  • Using negative numbers
  • Building the number with manipulatives

4
What is CGI?
  • Cognitively Guided Instruction is a teacher
    professional development program that helps
teachers understand how children think about
    mathematics.

5
CGI in Iowa
  • The Iowa Department of Education has supported a
state-wide CGI initiative since June 2005.
  • There are currently 18 Iowa-based CGI leaders who
have been trained through this initiative.
  • Over 400 teachers and teacher leaders in Iowa
    have participated in this initiative.

6
In Our CGI Classroom
  • We pose problems to the children without first
showing them how to solve the problem.
  • Children solve problems using their own
    strategies.

7
In Our CGI Classroom
  • Children share their mathematical thinking with
the teacher and with other children.
  • We observe and listen to the children as they
solve problems to assess individual childrens
    mathematical understanding.

8
In Our CGI Classroom
  • We use information about childrens mathematical
understanding to plan instructional moves and to
    choose further problems.
  • We look for conceptual understanding.

9
In Our CGI Classroom
  • We question students to stretch their strategies
and move them to a higher level of thinking.
  • We ask students to look for and implement
    efficient strategies.

What strategy did you use to solve this problem?
10
Research has found in CGI classrooms
  • Students in CGI classrooms spend more time
engaged in problem solving than students in
    non-CGI classrooms.
  • Students in CGI classrooms spend more time
talking about their mathematical ideas than
    students in non-CGI classrooms.

11
Problem Based Tasks
  • A real life problem is presented to the group.
  • Students use a variety of problem solving
    strategies to find the solution.
  • The investigation of a problem can extend for
    two, three, or more days.

Lets use a range of numbers, since we have a
lot of people.
12
Problem Based Tasks
  • Numerous math strands are incorporated throughout
    the problem.
  • Students apply concepts and skills gained from
    discussion and word problems.
  • Summarizing is an important component. It is
valuable for students to reflect on their
learning, hear from others and connect to others
    ideas.

How can we solve this problem?
  • Our bubble spots are too close together
therefore causing distractions. What can we do?
  • Make a map of our space to arrange new spots!

14
How can you help at home?
  • Ask your child to explain his or her thinking.
  • Listen to and question them about their strategy.
  • Pose real life problems (grocery store, gas
    station, store receipts, etc.)
  • Play mental math games.
  • Encourage the use of friendly numbers, relational
    thinking, and efficient strategies.

  • Thank you for attending our Brown Bag Lunch!
