Aims of the trust
  • To acquire the ownership, or legally-guaranteed
    control in perpetuity, of land to be designated
    Ecological Continuity Reserves, on which
    long-term ecological experiments will be
    conducted.
  • To provide the infrastructure for establishment
    and permanent maintenance of experiments on Trust
    land.
  • To ensure that experiments are continued
    indefinitely and that no developments
    predjudicial to this aim take place.
  • To facilitate scientific research and ecological
    monitoring within the Trusts reserves.
  • To raise funds for and manage an endowment in
    order to achieve the Trusts aims.

Experiments should
  • Include environmental/climatic treatments
  • Have good baseline ecological data
  • Have continuity of consistent management from
    their inception
  • Be statistically and geographically replicated
    within the UK.

Five-phase plan
  • Refine the scientific objectives of the ECT
  • Decide issues of land tenure and management
  • Define criteria for site selection and draw up a
    short list of experimental sites
  • Write a draft business plan
  • Complete the business plan and establish the ECT
    as a charity.

Aims of the meeting
  • Bring together interested parties so that
    prospective members of the panel may exchange
    ideas about the ECT proposal.
  • Identify potential panel members from among
    attendees and agree on others who ought to be
    invited to participate.
  • Consider which environmental variables ought to
    be manipulated in the first experiments. Obj.1 of
    Phase 1
  • Discuss fundraising and related strategic issues.
