Title: Concept for an ISLSWG International Flight Experiments Database (IFED)
1Concept for an ISLSWGInternational Flight
Experiments Database (IFED)
- Ken Souza, Deputy Director
- Astrobiology Space Research Directorate
- NASA Ames Research Center
- ISLSWG Meeting, April 2001
- (IFED Status updated December 2001)
2Outline
- Why develop an IFED?
- ISLSWG-facilitated information exchange
- Home page concept for IFED
- Experiment search/access
- Availability of online experiments
- Benefits of an IFED
- IFED Development timeline
- IFED Status (December 2001)
3Why Develop an IFED?
- ESA investigators requested international
experiments be made available like ARC/KSC CD-ROM
(i.e. E. Horn) - IFED will facilitate access to flight experiment
results - an ISLSWG Strategic Plan goal - Previous NASA (1997) ESA (1999) international
data archive proposals to ISLSWG not implemented - NASA, ESA, and NASDA experiments online now
- Russian BioCosmos experiments (670 experiments
from 12 countries, 1972 - 1990) can be online in
2 months - CSA Ukraine experiments can be put online if
experiment descriptions are provided
4Enhance Knowledge Info Exchange (ISLSWG
Strategic Goal-2)
- Promote archiving of space flight data
- Exchange archived information and publicize its
availability to international scientists - Provide simple means for the science community to
access space flight results for all life sciences
spaceflight experiments

7Availability of Online Experiments
NASA Available - Life Sciences Data Archive
(LSDA) (http//lsda.jsc.nasa.gov) ESA
Available /Pending - MicroGravity DataBase (MGDB)
(http//www.esa.int/mgdb/mgdbhome.html)
NASDA Available /Pending - International Space
Research Data Base (ISRDB) (http//idb.exst.nasd
a.go.jp/eng/home_e.html) Russian Available -
ARC/IMBP Flight Experiments Database CSA
Pending - No known online database Ukraine
Pending - No online database (STS-87, CUE, 10
expts)
Pending collaboration needed with data owners
to provide content or search optimization via
the IFED
8Benefits of an IFED
- An ISLSWG key Strategic Plan goal is met in 2001
with minimum cost and effort - International scientists have easy access to the
total collection of completed experiments for use
in preparing appropriate ISS research proposals - Provides access to experiment results in evolving
data archives maintained by ISLSWG-related space
agencies, so costs are shared and minimized - Simple solution to a long-standing need that
allows early evaluation of the benefits, with
upgrades, as warranted
9IFED Development Timeline
- May/June - Mains Associates (ARC contractor)
contacts data owners of all participating space
agencies to complete optimization of IFED html
search functions, and puts Russian Biocosmos
experiment database online at ARC - July/Sept. - complete development of functional
prototype of IFED and launch on ISLSWG web site
at ARC for online evaluation by ISLSWG members
and data owners - October 01 - at ISLSWG Mtg, review the utility
of the IFED for accessing human, animal, plant,
cell, experiment results and readiness to open to
international community - November 01 - open the IFED to international
users and announce its availability after full
testing, as warranted
10IFED Status December 2001
- Functional Prototype is developed and accessible
at www.mainsgate.com/IFE/ (username is IFE and
password is shared) - Facilitation of user reviews underway users
should provide comments via the feedback form on
the Web site - ISLSWG Member reviewsto be facilitated by Louis
Ostrach - ASGSB Member reviews (PIs, managers, students,
contractors) to be facilitated by Ken Souza - International experiment archive managers
(contact points still TBD) - Mains Associates will compile results of reviews
and submit to L. Ostrach and K. Souza
