Title: FellowSHIP
1FellowSHIP
- Presentasjon MAREN 27.04.04
2Fuel Cell background
Marine diesel 45.000 ppm Car diesel
350 ppm Global emissions from ship amount to
2 CO2, 4-6 of SOx and 10-15 NOx
Today practical NO regulations to ship
emissions! TomorrowUnited States EPAEuropean
Area IMO, EU directivesInternational IMO UN
Gothenburg Protocoll
- INCENTIVE MECHANISMS
- Trading mechanisms (NOx, SOx, CO2)
- Differentiated taxes on marine fuels
- Differentiated port and fairway dues
- Differentiated tonnage taxes
3Market feasibility
- 1999 Study concludes
- Even a low penetration of the shipping market can
yield an important market for the fuel cell
industry - The results are favourable to the development of
marine fuel cells -
DNV Report Benchmarking Ship Machinery for Fuel
Cells (2003) concludes The shipping industry
has learned to live with trade-offs High noise
vibration Poor fuel efficiencies Poor
reliability figures Poor power densities
4Market feasibility
HDW Yard / Siemens U-212 class submarine on her
first sea trial April 7th 2003. The submarine
include a 250 kW PEM fuel cell for propulsion in
submersed condition
- Worldwide several paper studies on fuel cells
for ship applications exists - Small demonstrators have been build, and Navy
Submarines - The conclusions of the projects are
similar Fuel cells are feasible for shipboard
use
5FellowSHIPFuel Cell Low Emission Ship
Kick-off 1st October 2003 Main
Partners Norway Eidesvik, Aker Kværner
Elektro Vik-Sandvik, DNV Sweden Wallenius
Marine Additional partners To be invited
Project Manager DNV Main Goal To develop two
FC concepts for use onboard ships, covering a)
auxiliary power and b) ship propulsion Budget
Phase 1 5,5 mill NOK
6FellowSHIPFuel Cell Low Emission Ship
- Main motivation for the project is to
- Reduce/eliminate emissions to air from ships
- Position the project partners for future emission
regulatory schemes, and the fuel cell technology - Position and build-up of reputation for social
responsibility - Draw advantage on features including high fuel
efficiency and silent operation
