1
The Cardiovascular SystemBy Sara Nordstrom
  • Focusing on
  • THE HEART

2
Parts of the Cardiovascular System
  • Heart
  • Veins
  • Arteries
  • Capillaries
  • Blood

Picture of Cardiovascular System
4
What does this body system do?
  • The job of this body system is to supply oxygen
and nutrients to all parts of the body and
removes carbon dioxide and waste products.

5
Blood
  • Blood is essential to our very life. It is the
fluid that carries all we need to all our body
cells and then removes the waste products from
these cells. It contains many different
components but today we are just learning how it
    travels through the Cardiovascular system.

6
The Heart
  • The Heart is the central part of the
Cardiovascular system. Without our heart and the
work it does for our bodies we would not be
alive. It is the pump that receives blood from
all parts of the body to replenish its oxygen
supply. It also sends oxygen-rich blood back out
to all parts of the body. There are two
different parts of the cardiovascular system that
carry this blood to and from the heart.

7
The Veins and the Arteries
  • The veins are the blue colored lines on the
diagram. They bring oxygen-lacking blood back to
the heart. Click here for more information.
    http//sln.fi.edu//biosci/vessels/veins.html
  • The arteries are the red colored lines they take
oxygen-rich back out to all parts of the body.
Read more about arteries by clicking this link
    http//sln.fi.edu//biosci/vessels/arteries.html

8
Capillaries
  • These are smaller then veins and arteries but
they branch off from these bigger vessels. They
transport blood to and from the smaller spaces
where the veins and arteries cannot go because of
their size. This link will give you further
    information about capillaries http//sln.fi.edu//

We know the PartsNow Lets Take a Trip
  • First the oxygen-lacking blood enters the heart
through two main veins the superior vena cava and
the inferior vena cava. This blood enters the
right atrium. Then the blood moves from the
right atrium to the right ventricle. Once the
blood is into the right atrium it is pumped up
the pulmonary artery to the lungs.

10
Next.
  • The blood leaving the heart travels to the lungs
where it gains much-needed oxygen. This blood
then returns to the heart through the pulmonary
veins and enters the left atrium. From the left
atrium the blood is pushed into the left
ventricle. When the heart contracts the blood is
sent up from the left ventricle through a large
artery called the aorta where it is distributed
to all parts of the body.

11
Take a look at this?
  • http//www.medtropolis.com/VBody.asp
  • This link will bring you on a narrated and visual
tour of the heart that I just explained on paper.
It does a lot better job and you can actually
see how the blood moves. Once you get here you
need to pick the language you want the tour to be
in. Then pick the selection for the Human Heart.
    Finally choose the narrated tour.

12
After the blood leaves the Aorta
  • Once the blood has left the heart through the
artery called the Aorta it travels to all parts
of the body, the fingers, the toes, and the far
ends of the body. The small blood vessels in
your body called capillaries allow the blood to
continue to flow where veins and arteries are no
longer able to do their job. The whole process is
continuous. There is always blood flowing to and
    away from your heart.

13
What did you learn???
  • I hope you learned about the different parts of
the cardiovascular system and the jobs each part
    does.
  • I hope you can understand what is happening when
    your heart beats.
  • What job is it doing???
