BACKGROUND and RELEVANCE FOR THE PRIORITY 6
SUSTDEV
  • What is the problem to be solved?
  • Study, design, development and validation of
new power electronic converters for distribution
networks based on advanced power electronic
    components, including optimized control
    strategies.
  • Why it should be solved?
  • To implement advanced power conversion
modules and control systems appropriate to
different types of Distributed Energy Resources
    (DER) on distribution networks.
  • What are the benefits if it is solved?
  • To improve efficiency, power quality and
    reliability, minimize losses and cost.

5
GOALS and POTENTIAL IMPACTS
  • What needs to be achieved to solve the problem?
  • On the basis of TU Sofia human potential and
    collaboration with leading European research
centers to work for implementation of DER in
Bulgaria in accordance with European politics.
  • To integrate Bulgaria into new European energy
space and to become leading research and
innovative centre for implementation of DER in
    South-Eastern Europe.

6
ST STRATEGY
  • How the goals can be achieved?
  • Modelling, simulation and design of fully
    controllable AC-DC / DC-AC converters and active
filters. Research in the area of efficiency,
power factor correction and safety control
oriented to DER and appropriate power conversion
    modules.
  • Research in the area of power hybrid systems,
modelling of DG networks. Upgrade of existing
equipment in the inter-university centre in TU
    Sofia.

7
ST STRATEGY
  • What work/approach is needed and chosen?
  • Know-how transfer, scientific visits, research
    co-operation, scientific and business re-inforce
and training (based on CLUSTER RESDG
    http//www.clusterintegration.org)
  • Implementation of new technologies,
communication, and real-time data acquisition and
control services, oriented to power sources,
clients and local energy management via power
lines, Internet or HF channel (based on REMPLI
    project, http//www.rempli.org)

8
WORK PLAN
  • Major tasks
  • Review of the international state of the art by
establishing new contacts with similar centres
    and leading companies in Europe.
  • To develop and implement advanced power
converters based on advanced power electronic
    components.
  • To develop and validate advanced grid
architecture enabling integration of DG sources
with current passive networks to evaluate to
    active network.
  • To develop new methods for remote energy
management and operational control based on
power-line, HF channel and Internet industrial
    and general-purpose communication.
  • To upgrade the existing inter-university centre
with fuel-cells and CHP and to develop
demonstrations and training courses for hybrid
    systems.
  • To work for synchronization of Bulgarian to
    European regulations standardization, testing
    and certification.

9
WORK PLAN
  • Timing and Duration
  • Overall duration 36 months. Every task of the
work plan will long between 6 to 18 months. Every
    task finishes with work-package deliverable.

10
Why is needed ?
  • To advance the novel concept for electricity in
    the Europe
  • Transformation of the conventional electricity
transmission and distribution grid as an
interactive and unified power supply network
  • Large share of distribution generation
  • Advanced power electronics and communications
    technologies
