- Summary
3Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)
- Sampling footprint between 35S and 35N, with
some composite data (TRMM additional satellite
or other met data) extending to 50S-50N - 4-D distribution (3-D time) of rainfall and
latent heating over vastly under sampled oceanic
(esp. So. Hem.) and tropical continental regimes
4Why is TRMM so important?
- TRMM is the first satellite mission to establish
the global distribution of rainfall at the
Earths surface. - Instruments
- Precipitation Radar (PR) 247 km swath width x 5
km instantaneous FOV - TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) 878 km x 5.1 km
FOV, 85.5GHz) - Visible and InfraRed Scanner (VIRS) 833 km x 2.4
km FOV

5TRMM has filled many gaps in our understanding of
the global distribution of rainfall, including
- frequency distributions of rainfall intensity and
areal coverage - the partitioning of rainfall into convective and
stratiform categories - the vertical distribution of hydrometeors
(including the structure and intensity of the
stratiform region bright band) and - the variation of the timing of heaviest rainfall.
