The Poetic Books -and-
The Davidic Covenant. The third
major time God spoke Job Psalms
Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of
Solomon
2
The Need To have a heart after Gods own heart!
3
(The Word in the Heart) The need came when the
Theocracy was at its highest glory!
(all books except Job).
God is ruling His people in
victory and prosperity.
David had a heart after God, so
God raises him up to be an example to us.
4
The Content These books are all in poetic form.
This indicates that they are the
inner experiences of these men.
Their are five different experiences
of life that are brought forth.

5

God during suffering.
Psalms The heart of the people of God in
various circumstances.

Proverbs The heart of a man of
God as he wisely faces the
practical affairs of life.

a man of God as he seeks
meaning outside of God.

Solomon The heart of a man of God in the

  • Job
  • The heart of a man of God in suffering.
  • The purposes of the book of Job are
  • To reveal who God is.
  • To show the kind of trust He wants
    His children to have.
  • To reveal His absolute control over Satan.
  • To answer mans questions about
why a righteous man may suffer.

7
JobSatans charge was that Jobs heart was not
right, but that he served God for protection and
profit.
  • God trusted Job! Gods own testimony of Job is
    (18) there is none like him in the earth.
  • Jobs testimony is (2310) He knows the way that
I take when He has tried me, I shall come forth
    as gold.
  • The bottom line What kind of trusting heart do
    we have?
  • Simple trust in God is the one thing needful,
because Gods ways are past finding out!

it up in 47 with who
    ever perished, being innocent ?

10

  • Note what God gave Solomon (1Ki. 429) wisdom
and understanding exceeding much, and largeness
    of heart.
  • The purpose of the book (Prov. 12-4) is
  • to receive Gods instruction, to receive with
    meekness.
  • The fear of the Lord is the beginning of
    wisdom.
  • Lordship is a heart matter.
  • Trust in the LORD with all your heart keep
your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow
    the issues of life.

26
The fool is one who trusts in his own heart
(286), who insists his way is right (1215).
  • Where is it that the fool has said, there is no
God? The fool has said in his heart, there is
    no God.
  • The purpose of the book is to receive
    instruction, wisdom, judgment, equity.
  • It is a matter of the heart because it must be
    received with meekness.

27
Ecclesiastes The heart of a man of God as he
seeks meaning outside of God. Purpose of the
Book To show the futility of pursuing
materialistic and earthly goals as an
end in themselves. To
point to God as the source of all that is truly
good. Every pursuit of man is futile if God is
excluded. Only Gods work endures, only
He can impart true value to mans life and
service.
28
Content of Book Shows the vanity of achieving
happiness by pursuing worldly values.
The authors conclusion is that
life without God is meaningless. (Ecclesiastes
12-3) The only solution for human life to be
truly meaningful Let us hear the conclusion of
the whole matter Fear God and keep His
commandments, for this is mans all. For God
will bring every work into judgment, including
every secret thing, whether good or evil.
Ecclesiastes 1213-14
29
Solomon sought satisfaction
in every area of life
science, philosophy, pleasure,
material wealth, morality,
religion, but nothing
satisfied. He sought out life under the sun.
(28 time this phrase is used) You
can write over all the wells of this world
you will thirst again (John 4). The blessed
man is one who is conscious of God
in all of life.
30
Under the Sun(Twenty-eight times)
  • Exodus 1237 Rameses means child of the sun.
Israel was called out of Egypt to the Promised
    Land.
  • Only things above the sun can satisfy your heart.
We must set our affection on things above.
  • Everything has value and meaning if the heart is
right with God cleaning, serving, playing,
working, resting, living and having our being in
    God.

31
  • Song of Solomon
  • The heart of a man of God in
    the marriage relationship.
  • There are various interpretations of the book
  • Allegorical Purely figurative, not based on
    historical fact.
  • Typical Teaching by example, based in historical
facts, but viewing these historical facts as
    figurative representations.
  • Purposes of the Book
  • Literal To honor pure human love and marriage.
  • Figurative To show the Lords love for His wife
    Israel and
Christs love for His bride the Church.

32
Comparison of Solomons Writings Song of Solomon
Written when he was young and in
love. Proverbs Written when he was middle-aged,
when his intellectual powers
were at their peak. Ecclesiastes Written
in his old age, when he was
disappointed and disillusioned with the carnality
of much of his life.
33
The Method God is speaking through the
experiences of a man who has in his heart what
God wants to communicate. These books are in the
form of a testimony. It seems that it is not
God speaking, but rather man However God is
actually speaking in the experiences
of a man who has in his heart
what God wants to communicate. These
books are just as much God speaking as at Sinai!

34
The Response Required Finding you own personal
expression through the experiences of others. We
can make these our very own words. Pray through
a Psalm. Take these words and say them back to
God.
35
Poetic Books and The Davidic Covenant
  • Need A heart after Gods own heart.
  • Content The inner experiences of all areas of
    life.
  • Method God speaks through the experiences of a
man who has in his heart what God wants to
    communicate.
  • Response Find your own personal expression in the
Poetic books. Thy word have I hid in my
    heart.

36
Gods Covenant with David
37
The Occasion
  • 2 Samuel 7
  • Now it came to pass when the king was
dwelling in his house, and the Lord had given him
rest from all his enemies all around, that the
king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I
dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God
dwells inside tent curtains." Then Nathan said to
the king, "Go, do all that is in your heart, for
    the Lord is with you."

38
The Occasion
  • But it happened that night that the word of the
Lord came to Nathan, saying, "Go and tell My
servant David, 'Thus says the Lord "Would you
build a house for Me to dwell in? For I have not
dwelt in a house since the time that I brought
the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to
this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a
tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about with all
the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word
to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I
commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying,
'Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?' " '

39
The Occasion
  • Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant
David, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts "I took you
from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to
be ruler over My people, over Israel. And I have
been with you wherever you have gone, and have
cut off all your enemies from before you, and
have made you a great name, like the name of the
great men who are on the earth.
  • Moreover I will appoint a place for My people
Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell
in a place of their own and move no more nor
shall the sons of wickedness oppress them
anymore, as previously, since the time that I
commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and
have caused you to rest from all your enemies.

40
The Covenant Given
  • Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a
    house
  • "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with
your fathers, I will set up your seed after you,
who will come from your body, and I will
establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for
My name, and I will establish the throne of his
    kingdom forever.
  • I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If
he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the
rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took
it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. And
your house and your kingdom shall be established
forever before you. Your throne shall be
established forever." ' " According to all these
words and according to all this vision, so Nathan
    spoke to David.

41
Davids Response
  • Then King David went in and sat before the Lord
and he said "Who am I, O Lord God? And what is
my house, that You have brought me this far? And
yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord
God and You have also spoken of Your servant's
house for a great while to come. Is this the
manner of man, O Lord God?
  • Now what more can David say to You? For You, Lord
God, know Your servant. For Your word's sake, and
according to Your own heart, You have done all
these great things, to make Your servant know
them. Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For
there is none like You, nor is there any God
besides You, according to all that we have heard
    with our ears.

42
Abrahams Covenant emphasized the land and
seed. The Davidic Covenant confirms the
seed.
  • 2 Sam.712 I will set up thy seed after thee,
who will come from your body, and I will
    establish his kingdom.

43
The Isaiah gives a Confirmation
  • Isaiah 96-7
  • For unto us a Child is born,
  • Unto us a Son is given
  • And the government will be upon His shoulder.
  • And His name will be called
  • Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
  • Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
  • Of the increase of His government and peace
  • There will be no end,
  • Upon the throne of David and over His
    kingdom,
  • To order it and establish it with judgment
    and justice
  • From that time forward, even forever.
  • The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform
    this.

44
Abrahams Covenant emphasized the land and
seed. The Davidic Covenant confirms the
seed.
  • Ps.893,4,34-36 I have made a covenant with my
chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, Thy
seed will I establish forever, and build up thy
throne to all generations My covenant I will
not violate, nor will I alter the utterance of My
lips. Once I have sworn by My holiness I will
not lie to David. His descendants shall endure
forever, and his throne as the sun before Me.
  • Jer.3322-26 As the host of heaven cannot be
numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured
so will I multiply the seed of David If I have
not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth
then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and
    David my servant.
  • Note God confirms Davids kingdom, throne, and
    house.

45
What does the Kingdom, Throne, and House mean?
  • Kingdom Throne means Davids right to rule
    political Israel.
  • also the royal throne rights, the dignity and
    sovereign power belong to David.
  • House means his physical descendants, the right
to rule will never be transferred to another
    family.
  • Note Gods Covenant Promise to David
  • And thy house and thy kingdom shall be
established forever before thee thy throne
shall be established forever 2 Sam.716.

46
What are the Provisions of 2 Samuel 712-16?
  • Thy seed after thee David is to have a child
who succeeds him and establishes his kingdom.
  • He shall build a house for My name This son,
Solomon, built the temple instead of David.
  • I will establish the throne of his kingdom
    forever.
  • My mercy shall not depart away from him, as I
took it from Saul, whom I put away Solomons
sins justified Gods judgment, yet Gods mercy
    prevailed.
  • Davids house, throne, and kingdom - shall be
established forever. This is confirmed by God
    again and again
  • (Isa.96-7 Jer.3314-17 Ezek.3724-25 Daniel
    713-14 Hosea 34-5 Amos 911 Zechariah 144,9)

47
The Davidic Covenant is unconditional.
  • It is called eternal in (2Sam.713,16 235
Isa.553 Ezekiel 3725). If called eternal it
is unconditional in that it rests upon the
    faithfulness of Gods oath.
  • Psalm 13211
  • The Lord has sworn in truth to David
  • He will not turn from it
  • "I will set upon your throne the fruit of
    your body.

48
Christ is seated now at the right hand of the
Fathers Throne. Is this the Davidic Throne?
  • When Christ returns from the right hand of the
Fathers throne, He will then effect a literal
    earthly kingdom (Mt.251-3 31-46 Lk.131-33).
  • Obviously, Christ is not now on the throne of
David bringing blessing to Israel, but He is
waiting for operation footstool to be complete
(Ps.1101) The Lord says to my Lord Sit at My
right hand until I make Thine enemies thy
    footstool.

49
The Eschatology of the Davidic Covenant
  • Israel must be preserved as a nation for His Word
    to be fulfilled literally.
  • Israel must be in their homeland of inheritance
    (definite geographical boundaries).
  • Davids literal-physical Son must return to rule
and reign over his promised kingdom.
  • A literal kingdom must be established over which
the Messiah will reign, seated upon Davids
    throne.
  • This kingdom must become an eternal kingdom and
there must be no end to the Messiahs reign.
  • The first two of these has happened literally.
