Title: Human Motion Tracking and Reasoning for Rehab

1
Human Motion Tracking and Reasoning for Rehab
  • Joint project by
  • TNUA(Taipei national University of
    Arts)-UCCS-Denver Children Hospital

2
Project Team
  • Dr. James Carollo, Director of Center for Gait
and Movement Analysis (CGMA) and Director of
Musculoskeletal Research Center (MRC) at the
    Denver Children Hospital
  • Ms. Susan Kanai, Physical Therapy Expert, Denver
    Children Hospital
  • Ms. Jessica Davis, Denver Children Hospital
  • Professor Yunyu Wang of TNUA and Colorado College
  • Professor Semwal Sudhansu, UCCS Computer Science
  • Professor Edward Chow, UCCS Computer Science

3
Project Goal
  • To conduct research for improving rehab patient
    care by applying
  • Labanotation
  • Computer modeling/animation techniques
  • Wireless sensor tracking systems for specifying
    and recording rehab exercises.

4
Project Plan
  • Task 1 Identify and record key rehab exercises
  • Task 2 Derive the equivalent Labanotation and
LMA for the key rehab exercises
  • Task 3 Examine LabanDancer Software
  • Task 4 Design rehab exercise specification/animat
    ion tool
  • Task 5 WSN for recording rehab exercises
  • Task 6 Evaluation the proposed techniques/tools
    for improving rehab care

5
Deliverables and Mile Stones
  • Task1 -(2 months after the start of the project)
  • Brief description of the selection rationale (
    rehab exercises)
  • Data files and motion capture data from each
    exercises.
  • Document that describes the set of selected rehab
exercises in terms of current rehab terms.
  • Task 3 Document that describes the results of
    task 3
  • Task 4 Document that describes the evaluation
    results of task 4.
  • Task 5 Document that describes the evaluation
    results of task 5.
  • Task 6 Document that describes the evaluation
    results of task 6

What is Laban ?
  • Captures dance movement on the page and
interprets it thru symbols so that it can be
    shared
  • By simply reading a symbol on a staff, one
    immediately knows
  • The direction of the movement.
  • The part of the body doing the movement
  • The level of the movement
  • The length of the time it takes to do the
    movement.

7
Symbols
  • The shape of the symbol tells you the direction
    of the movement.

8
Symbols
  • A symblo can be used to show a step or a gesture
  • A step is a movement that takes weight
  • A gesture is a movement that dosent take weight.
  • Eg. A forward symbol can either represent a
    forward step or a gesture

9
Symbol Placement
  • Placement of the symbol tells us which part of
the body is doing the movement

10
Symbol Shading
  • Shading of the symbol tell you the level at which
    movement takes place.
  • Steps- low level is with a bent leg, middle level
is with a straight leg, and high level is up on
    the toes.
  • Gestures - middle level is with the limb parallel
to the floor. The hand or the foot is on the same
level as the shoulder or hip. Low level is below
    this, high level above.

How to read ?
  • Starting position - three beats to the measure, a
quarter note getting one beat.Start with the
feet together, knees straight. The arms are out
to the sides, slanted down at a 45 degree angle
