Parent questionnaire
  • WESTFIELD SCHOOL IS WORKING TOWARDS FAIR TRADE
    STATUS
  • What is Fair Trade? The producers of Fair Trade
goods have been paid a fair price that guarantees
that they will cover their costs, and have some
left over to invest for the future. They have
better working conditions, are able to take more
care of the environment, and often produce a
better quality product as a result. Buying fair
trade products is one of the ways in which we can
make a positive contribution to making poverty
    history.
  • Oak class are working on aspects of Fair Trade
in their CITIZENSHIP sessions. It is also part of
out International awareness and ECO and Healthy
    schools status.
  • Students in other classes will also have input as
it is a whole school topic.
  • Please could you let us know if you would like to
    be involved?
  • We would also like you to fill in the
    questionnaire below. (Please Tick)

  • Do you recognise the Logo?

WESTFIELD NEWSLETTER-Sept/Oct 07
  • WE have looked at Fairtrade on our Espresso
website over the last year and staff have shown
    awareness..
  • Oak class have been working on this topic in
their CITIZENSHIP sessions .It involves 5
sections and we are almost there.
  • We have been to the Forbury in Leominster to have
a committee meeting with Linda Mckinney? And
Barbara Marks Leominster Fair trade . Agenda and
minutes on our website. We have worked on a
Policy which involves, students, Governors and
staff agreeing. The student Council will look at
it too. We have visited Oxfam and a local
supermarket to see Fairtrade products and gain
    awareness of the Fairtrade mark.
  • We have shown Fairtrade items to the general
public at the Fete, and used Fairtrade items for
    refreshments.
  • We now use Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar for
all events such as our Multicultural Harvest,
    Pink Day Coffee Morning.
  • We worked on a poster in ICT after browsing the
website www.fairtrade.org.uk We used clip art,
drawings and packaging sent in by parents (Thank
    you)
  • For our Fairtrade assembly we had Barbara Marks
and Jan Hardy of Leominster Fairtrade.. Jan
talked about fairness and we looked at 2 sets
of farmers-tea, cocoa and banana, -One set worked
hard for low pay1 and had to lots of hardship
the others had the help of Fairtrade and they got
more money and worked hard also but were able to
benefit and improve their families life-lots of
boos and cheers during the assembly. We smelt and
tasted the products and sang a song from CO_OP
Get your school Fairtrade friendly DVD.
  • This has a great Fairtrade Karaoke song which is
    now on the website..
  • Hopefully the younger students will have gained
an awareness of the Fairtrade mark .
  • Unfortunately the products are expensive but if
everyone just buys one item occasionally we might
make a difference to farming families and their
    children around the world.
  • The local issues of farming will hopefully be
looked at when we get our own farmer soon.
  • We have another committee meeting in the new term
to think about what Westfield has achieved and
what more we have to do.. We will put all we have
done with photos on a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Although Oak class will be looking at the Country
code and Woodland Trust next half term we will
still be monitoring FAIRTRADE till we achieve
    Fairtrade school status.
  • Our thanks to Leominster Juniors who have
achieved the status and who lent us their poster
    as part of their assessment
  • See also www.herefordshirefairtrade.org.uk
