Title: Delivering a Sustainable Future
1Delivering a Sustainable Future
7th November
2what is sustainability?
Sustainable development is development which
meets the needs of the present generation without
compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs Brundtland Report 1987 In
other words.

3Energy performance of buildings directive - UK
- All buildings to require Energy Performance
Certificates by January 2009 - Also Display Energy Certifiactes for Public
Buildings by January 2009 - This will rate buildings based on their energy
performance
Likely to have profoundeffect on
commercialProperty sector Prof David Strong.
4Kingspan panels vision
- To be a global leader in sustainable business
and establish a leading position in providing
sustainable, renewable and affordable solutions
for the construction sector.
57 long term sustainability objectives
- Sustainable Product Stewardship
- Carbon management beyond carbon neutral
- Optimise use of resources
- Sustainable building design
- Ethical procurement supply chain management.
- Stakeholder engagement
- Social responsibility.
6Progress to date
- Carbon foot printing and carbon management system
being implemented for whole business. - Independent energy audits undertaken at all
sites. - 300 personnel trained on environmental /
sustainability issues so far. Process ongoing - Wind energy being investigated at Holywell
Sherburn. Planning applications progressing. - CHP being investigated at Kingscourt wind not
currently viable.
7Management Standards
- Kingspan Holywell is certified to
- ISO 14001 - Environmental Management System
Standard - OHAS 18001 - Health Safety Standard
- ISO 9001 - Quality Management System
8Carbon Trust- Energy Reductions
- Carrying out recommendations of compressed air
survey has resulted in a saving of 14,000 per
annum at Holywell. - 120 tonnes of CO2 emissions
- Projects involved in restructuring our heating
and lighting systems i.e. switching to
energy-saving lighting will save approx. 50,000
this year. - 430 tonnes of CO2 emissions
- Recently launched our employee Energy Awareness
handbook.
9Kingspan Panels GRI Sustainability Report
- Report follows GlobalReporting
InitiativeGuidelines. - Our second annual reportpublished in June 2008.
- Holland Belgium to be included in 2008 report
10 End-of-life Management of Kingspan
Insulated Panels
11End-of-life Management
- All currently produced Kingspan insulated panels
are classed as non-hazardous and do not contain
CFCs or HCFCs. - Kingspan insulated panels have a commercial value
for disposal at end of life subject to transport
costs. - Shredder plants offer a proven solution for
dealing with insulated panels with non-ozone
depleting blowing agents which can be safely
processed as a co-feed with other scrap
materials. - The cost of processing panels through shredder
plants is approximately cost neutral with the
transport costs from site being covered by the
scrap value of the steel.
12Recycling
- Kingspan has done successful trials in putting
granulated insulation core back into virgin
product. - Currently being implemented in Kingscourt. Roll
out to Holywell later this year. - Future potential for Cradle to cradle rather than
cradle to grave.
13Kingspan ECOsafe insulated panels
14Kingspan ECOsafe insulated panels
- Kingspan insulated panels use an
improved environmentally sustainable firesafe PIR
insulation core. - Kingspan Ecosafe insulated panels are the result
of extensive research and development work to
provide an optimised and sustainable solution for
our customers.
15Benefits of ECOsafe Panels
- LPCB certified.
- Low GWP (Global Warming Potential).
- Optimum performance in environmental assessment
methods such as BREEAM. - Specific Kingspan Ecosafe insulated panel systems
are independently audited and certified by BRE as
Green Guide A Rated. - Commercial value for disposal at end of life
subject to transport costs. -
- No other panel manufacturer can provide the
unique combination of LPCB approval, low GWP,
Environmental profiling, BREEAM Credits and cost
neutral disposal costs.
16BRE Environmental Profiles
- Quantified embodied environmental performance
- All associated embodied impacts of a product
12 xEnvironmental Impacts
Cradle tograve data
Ecopoints
- Complies with International Standards(Series
14020 14040)
17BRE Certificates and Appendices

20Benefits of BRE certification
- Obtain additional credits in BREEAM
- Low GWP
- A rated envelope
- ISO 14001 contributes to responsible sourcing
- Quantifies carbon footprint of our products.
21Summary.
- Kingspan can play a key role in the sustainable
construction agenda through - Commitment to sustainability
- Long term commitment to carbon neutrality
beyond. - Low energy, low waste, ISO 14001, ISO 18001 ISO
9001 certified manufacturing processes - Audited A rated BRE environmental profile data
unique in metal cladding sector. - Kingspan helps deliver credits for BREEAM
Assessments. - Cost neutral end of life management at present
progress being made to recycle insulation to
achieve full cradle to cradle recyclability.
