Contamination Control DrivesInvention of HEPA
Filter
  • HEPA History
  • Scandia Labs invented the High Efficiency
Particulate Arrestor to protect workers from
    deadly nuclear particles (1945)
  • Loss of several early satellites leads NASA to
    develop contamination control technology around
    HEPA filtration (early 1960s)
  • NASA establishes clean room standards for US
Manned Space Program (late 1960s) using HEPA now
called High Efficiency Particulate Air Filtration
  • ISO develops standards for HEPA filtration (1990)

4
What is a HEPA filter?
  • To qualify as a true HEPA air filter media, the
filter must allow no more than 3 particles out
of 10,000 to penetrate the filter media
  • HEPA filter media has a specified or guaranteed
    filter efficiency
  • HEPA filter media is used to protect people from
exposure to particles that may cause acute or
    chronic illness

5
Technology Comparisons
  • High Efficiency Filters
  • Ex Framed Furnace Filters
  • Mechanical filters that use air flow to trap
particles in a mesh of filter media
  • Usually capable of trapping dust-size
particles, but not micron size particles
  • Effective only when the furnace is operating
  • Deep pleated filters only 15 efficient for
particles as small as 0.3 microns
  • Not recommended by EPA or American Lung
    Association
  • Electronic Filters
  • Ex Electrostatic Precipitator
  • Uses electric field to give particles a charge
causing them to attach to a plate or screen
  • May create ozone, a potent lung irritant
  • 70 efficient at removing particles as small as
    0.3 microns
  • Frequent cleaning
  • Not recommended by EPA or American Lung
    Association due to ozone release
  • HEPA Filters
  • Ex Imperial Model 300T
  • HEPA filter media removes particles and
charcoal filter reduces airborne chemicals and
    absorbs odors
  • Traps particles that are small enough to
    penetrate the lungs
  • 99.97 efficient Ex out of 6,000 air particles
as small as 0.3 microns, a HEPA filter will trap
    5,998
  • Recommended by EPA and Lung Association
  • Minimal Cleaning

  • The motor is sandwiched between filters which
    provides extra sound isolation

Design and Performance
  • Mechanical Design
  • Durable metal, not plastic, which can be a source
    of V.O.C.s.
  • Insolated cabinet for sound attenuation.
  • Metal construction for resistance to resonance
and vibration that can make plastic housings
    noisy and vulnerable to cracking
  • Fan motor is energy-efficient, quiet and capable
of working a sufficiently high static pressure
for optimum air flow through the HEPA filter
  • Air Flow Design
  • Air outlet should blow away from the intake side
of the unit to prevent recycling already filtered
    air
  • Filter cartridges are designed as a sealed system
to ensure that all incoming air is cleaned
  • Air conduit must be sealed from intake through
the filter to the vent to prevent leakage
  • Filtration Process
  • 3-Stage process maximizes effectiveness of HEPA
    unit
  • Pre-filter traps largest particles dust, pollen,
    molds, etc.
  • Carbon filter reduces airborne chemicals and
    absorbs odors
  • HEPA filter media removes particles of up to 0.3
microns such as bacteria, viruses, smoke

9
Operational Factors
  • Flexible Installation
  • Unit adapts to floor plan, living habits and
    aesthetic choices
  • It is versatile to work as single room,
    area-specific or whole-house installations
  • Operation and Control
  • Simple, intuitive controls.
  • Quiet, yet capable of effective air treatment
    volume
  • Zero mechanical maintenance
  • Easy access door for filter replacement,
    essential for maintaining maximum effectiveness

Controls
ON / OFF The ON setting goes automatically to the
last speed setting used.
SPEED CONTROL Pressing this button cycles from
LOW to NORMAL to HIGH and back to LOW. At night,
you will want to set your control button to low
speed for noise level comfort.
TURBO TIMER This is a super-high speed mode with
pre-set timer selections of 1 hour, 3 hours or 8
hours. The TURBO mode processes air at
approximately 300 cubic feet per minute. The
Turbo Timer function enables you to select a set
amount of time for maximum air filtration letting
the Model 300T work at maximum efficiency while
you are not in the room, away at work or out
doing errands.

Rooms size of Filtered Air per hour
(Clean Room Classification is based
on 6 Air Changes per Hour)
LOW SPEED 800 Cubic feet (6 ACH)
(Room of 10 x 10 x 8 Ceiling)
NORMAL SPEED 1568 Cubic feet (6 ACH)
(Room of 14 x 14 x 8 Ceiling)
TURBO TIMER 3.200
Cubic feet (6 ACH) (Room of 20 x
20 x 8 Ceiling) (Timed period
of 1HR., 3HRS. or 8HRS.)
HIGH SPEED 2048 Cubic feet (6 ACH)
(Room of 16 x 16 x 8 Ceiling)

The Imperial HEPA System measures up on all
factors
  • Mechanical Design
  • Heavy-duty commercial-quality metal construction
  • High-efficiency motor (quiet, energy-efficient)
with shaped fan blades (high air volume, optimum
    static pressure)
  • Filtered air moves away from the unit to prevent
    recycling of filtered air
  • Sealed air conduit ensures all intake air goes
    through HEPA filter
  • 3-Stage filtration process maximizes overall
    efficiency and performance
  • Pre-filter traps larger particles carbon filter
reduces airborne chemicals and absorbs odors
HEPA filter removes micron-size particles down
    to0.03 microns
  • Floor, Wall, Duct, Whole-house provides
    versatility
  • 4-level air control with timer for total control
  • Turbo Timer mode for operating on highest
setting allows maximum filtration when you
    leave the house
