Exploration of Web Service Technology

Web Services! What Are They? Web services are
the latest new technology being investigated and
used to create distributed systems. Be it within
one company or between many, over a single
network or the entire internet. This can be done
because of the stack of languages used to define
Web Services (see below). Because of this Web
Services are language and platform independent,
hence being able to be used across the internet.
It is thought that once the technology is
developed, Web Services will be able to make
calls to other Web Services and therefore be able
to create far more complex distributed systems
from relatively simple services

My project. The project that I plan to
undertake will be one that can be used within the
university environment. What I plan to do is
create a Web Service that will allow users to
enter the unit codes of the units that they wish
to take in the following semester. The Web
Service will then take these unit codes and with
them search the university database and return to
the user their timetable of lectures and possible
tutorials as well as a warning of any timetable
clashes that may occur.
