The First Strawberries

• Long ago in the southwest when the world was
  new, the creator made a man and woman at the same
  time. They got married and for a long time they
  lived together and were happy.

• Then one afternoon the man came home from
  hunting and found that the woman had not yet
  began to prepare their meal. Instead she was
  outside picking flowers.

• The man now grew angry. I picked those flowers
  to share my beauty with you, she said. Your
  words hurt me! she said. I will live with you
  no longer.

• She began to walk to the Sun. The Sun watched as
  her husband followed her. The Sun saw how sorry
  the man was and took pity on him.

• The Sun shone its light on the Earth in front
  of the woman. Raspberries grew up. The berries
  were so ripe and good to eat, but she paid no
  attention to them because of her anger.

• The Sun tried again and up grew blackberries but
  she paid no attention to them because of the
  anger.

• Last, the Sun tried its hardest and up grew
  strawberries. They were as red as fire. The woman
  bit into one and the sweetness reminded her of
  her husband. The woman had to pick them for her
  husband. Her husband caught up to her and said
  sorry and till this day when the Cherokee people
  eat strawberries they are remember that
  friendship and respect are as sweet as the taste
  of ripe red berries.
