Program Evaluation
  • A total of 87 students were surveyed after
    participating in a half-day workshop.
Thirty-nine of the students were males.
  • The workshop consisted of 9 stations supplying
information and hands-on activities related to
    nursing or nursing programs.
  • The majority of students expressed enthusiasm for
the workshop. Students also stated that the
program allowed them to view a nursing career in
    a positive light.

4
Program Evaluation
  • Male students were intrigued by the technical
nature of the nursing skills stations and focused
less on the stereotypical view of caretaking
    nurses.
  • Since high school students in grades 10-12 were
involved, the full impact will be seen in coming
    years.
  • As more students are exposed to the positives of
a nursing career, hopefully, more males will
enroll in the FHS Health Career Explorations
class and the RRCC Nursing program.

5
Future Goals and Sustainability
  • Program results are encouraging and the committee
is very interested in seeking funds to host the
    nursing skills camp program again.
  • The organizational groundwork has been laid and
future programs would be able to continue based
on the original nursing skills stations.

6
Goals and Outcomes

skills through hands-on learning to better
determine whether nursing will become their

and blood pressure and testing reflexes, eyes and
    ears.
  • Outcome Thirty-nine male high school students
performed 9 nursing skills glucose testing,
dressing wounds, testing eyes, testing blood
pressure, testing bone density, analyzing germs,
    analyzing neurology, administering injections and
learning more about RRCCs nursing program.

understanding of the profession of nursing and be
able to make an informed decision as to whether
they wish to pursue a career in nursing.

Lessons Learned
  • Skills stations were too close together
difficult to concentrate on one presenter,
  • difficult to move from one station to next.
  • Nursing students know nursing skills but need
    pointers on presentation skills.
  • Hands-on and participatory stations were more
    interesting to students.
  • Information dissemination did not work well in
    stations.
