Safety and Emergency Plan
  • Safety Plan- Review days activities and
    possible safety concerns each morning- Establish
    and follow the buddy system, which will include
    one Spanish-speaking person per group- Each
    person will carry the name and address of the
    hotel in case of becoming separated

  • Emergency Plan and Exit Strategy- In event of
    medical emergency, members will go to Hospiten
    (809-686- 1414)
  • In event of political unrest, members will go to
    the United States Consulate in Santo Domingo
  • In the event of a hurricane alert, a notice will
    be posted on the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo's
    web page. Traveling members are aware of this
    possibility.

Overall Project Objective
  • To provide a sustainable, reliable source of
    energy to the current water supply system of
    Guaricano, which also provides water to the local
    health clinic.

Site Assessment Data Needs
  • Verify dimensions of system components (i.e.
    well, cistern, tank, etc.)
  • Acquire information needed to finalize technical
    design plans (i.e. spec components necessary for
    electrical/plumbing interfaces, measure pump flow
    rates, etc.)
  • Photograph system components to show system
    layout to non-traveling team members.
  • Observe and document health clinics third-floor
    construction.

Site Assessment Data Needs
  • Identify PV panel mounting orientation and
    possible support structure construction.
  • Investigate local construction resources (i.e.
    tools, materials, labor, etc.)
  • Obtain water samples for quality testing from
    each stage in the pumping system.

  • Water delivery rates to cistern and roof tank
  • Reliability of current electrical system
  • Cost of current electrical system
  • General health of community
  • Power availability to health clinic

Methods
  • Observe and document living conditions of
    surrounding area
  • Inquire with health clinic staff about community
    health statistics (i.e. disease and dehydration)
  • Discuss with FEDOPO leader cost and reliability
    of electricity
  • Take measurements over several days of quantities
    that vary (i.e. power, water levels,etc) for a
    reliable sample set.
  • Use equipment to test water on site or collect
    samples to test in the United States.
  • Observe suns trajectory over the clinics area.
    Note any nearby obstacles that may overshadow
    panels.
  • Speak with third-floor construction manager
    regarding construction plans and how they will
    affect EWB project.
  • Inquire about local construction resources (i.e.
    tools, labor, materials, etc.)

Team Training
  • Travel team will attend cultural orientation
    sessions.
  • Travel team will be trained to use all necessary
    testing equipment.
  • Travel team will be educated about safety issues
    and will follow safety and emergency plans.

  • Quantitative measuring equipment (i.e.
    voltmeters, power meters, tape measure, etc.)
  • Documentation supplies (i.e. legal pads, pens,
    digital camera, etc.)
  • Water testing equipment or sampling vials

Logistics of Community Interactions
  • Our project coordinator and faculty member
    visited the area in October and shared their
    experience with travel team members
  • Part of the orientation will also include
    information about the culture of the area
  • The EWB team will be traveling with other Case
    Western Reserve University representatives
    including several Spanish majors.
    Spanish-speaking Case staff include Spanish
    professor, Jacqueline Nanfito, Glenn Odenbrett
    from the Office of Student Community Service, and
    Doug VanAuken.
  • Feedback from the community will come from the
    NGO, FEDOPO, which represents all members of the
    community, as well as from individual community
    members and the health clinic staff
  • Team members may visit surrounding areas if time
    allows

Living Arrangements
  • Team Members will be staying in Antiguo Hotel
    Europa in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
    (www.antiguohoteleuropa.com ), (809) 285-0005.
  • The travel team will be traveling on Continental
    Airlines to Santo Domingo via Newark, New Jersey.
  • Breakfast is provided by the hotel, other meals
    will be purchased at local restaurants, as well
    as bottled water.
