MODULE TWO NKO

Navy Knowledge Online A Brief History
  • NKO was launched in September 2002 as the
vehicle for the Chief of Naval Operations ADM
Vern Clark's initiative to enhance operational
    readiness and increase mission effectiveness.
The result of the CNO's mandate was a revolution
in the Navy's Training and education structure.
As a part of this revolution, NKO has evolved
into a major component of the Navy's integrated
    delivery system for lifelong learning
    initiatives, personal development, and knowledge
    management.

The Road Ahead
  • As both technology and content evolve, so
    shall NKO Afloat.
  • The next evolution of NKO Afloat undergoing
implementation (Sea Warrior Spiral 1) will
include more functionality and the ability to
access 5VM, ETJ, JCMS, and the Learning
    Management System (LMS / ILE).
  • Each subsequent spiral (system revision) is
expected to be more robust than its predecessor.
  • The ultimate goal would be to replicate the
complete functionality of that which is available
to the shore NKO Portal user.

7
Vision
  • The Navy doesnt lose corporate knowledge due
    to transfers and attrition.
  • Sailors learn and grow continually. As a result,
retention continues to improve, and we have
    smarter sailors.
  • The Navy becomes The Learning Organization and
    all that implies.

Afloat/Ashore Differences
  • Many tabs and links are not available on the
Afloat version in the interest of bandwidth
  • Public forums, discussion threads and posts are
the only items replicated in the Afloat version
  • The most noticeable difference is the content
contained, again, due to bandwidth restrictions.
The Afloat and Ashore version have the same look
and feel enabling the user to easily transition
    between the two for use.
  • Although the Afloat and Ashore versions are
separate, you will not need separate accounts for
    user logins and passwords.
  • The Afloat version is resident on your ships
    server
  • The Ashore version is resident on servers via the
    web
