2The GBV Prevention Network is dynamic group of
activists and practitioners committed to
preventing gender based violence in the Horn,
East and Southern Africa.
We are a vibrant space for innovation,
expertise, experience and exchange on GBV
prevention
3Our history
- In 2003, Raising Voices conducted an extensive
regional field review of groups working on GBV
and GBV prevention. - September 2003 Raising Voices and UN Habitats
Safer Cities Program hosted a Regional Dialogue
in Kampala. - Leaders from 30 NGOs in 11 countries in the
Horn, East and Southern Africa that were
identified from the field review working on GBV
prevention participated in the meeting. - Participants highlighted the lack of, yet need
for, connection, sharing, learning from and
networking with other like-minded organizations. - As a result, the GBV Prevention Network was
born!

Training The network seeks out opportunities and
collaborations for trainings, workshops and
conferences for members to further develop
capacity on GBV prevention.

annual 16 Days of Activism campaign underway
regionally since 2004. Action and Advocacy Kits

Focal NGOs A group of dynamic partners called
Focal NGOs lead the GBV Prevention Network at
the country level. They ? work
hand-in-hand with the Network ? are one in
each country/area ? help bring members in
closer contact with each other ? strengthen
national level networking and activities ?
encourage sharing with other member organizations
in various countries ? serve for two years,
allowing for different members take on role

- Focal NGOs responsibilities
- ? Maintain up-to-date contact list of members
in their country / area - ? Actively participate in the activities
- ? Communicate with each member every month
- ? Encourage members in country to contribute
resources to website - ? Distribute printed materials from the GBV
Prevention Network to members - ? Promote active participation in the
Network, including encouraging new members. - ? Give presentations about the network at a
national, regional or international forums or
meetings

Regional Gatherings Sharing, learning and
networking with like-minded activists inspires
new ideas and creates regional synergy. Thats
why the Network hosts regional dialogues bringing
together activists from across the region. ?
The most recent gathering was in November 2006 in
Kampala with over 100 activists working on
violence from around the region

18Membership responsibilities
- ? Communicate with your Focal NGO at least four
times during the year (once per quarter) - ? Keep your Focal NGO and/or the secretariat
updated on your current contact information and
activities. - ? Communicate with the network secretariat via
phone, email or post at least twice during the
year. - Send in at least one electronic resource to
post on the website, or submit a piece for the
newsletter, once during the year. - Be a champion of the network by talking about
it in the different forums and meetings you or
your organization attend.
19Leadership
- ? A Leadership Committee of five representatives
of member organizations is responsible for the
strategic direction and policy decision of the
Network. - ? Focal NGOs also play a leadership role by
guiding activities, organizing events and
contributing to the direction of the Network. - ? Each Thematic Working Group is lead or co-lead
by member organizations. The Group Leads are
responsible for coordinating activities,
fostering growth and building skills of Thematic
Working Group members. - GBV Prevention Network is coordinated by
Raising Voices - Support from PATH and HIVOS
