Title: Reading and Telling the TIME
1Reading and Telling the TIME
A clock face has numbers on it from 1 to 12 It
also has three hands some have only two, but our
clock has three hands. The large or longer black
hand reads the MINUTES The small or shorter black
hand reads the HOURS The red hand reads the
SECONDS.
2Our Clock is an Analogue Clock also we have
Digital Clocks
The longer black hand reads the MINUTES
The red hand reads SECONDS
A Digital clock would look like this
0150 AM
Or
1350 PM
The shorter black hand reads the HOURS

3Reading the time
The second hand moves forward once every second
WATCH COUNT the moves.
Seconds
The second hand moved forwards 15 seconds. Each
mark is either read in seconds OR Minutes using
the minute hand.
These marks on the clock face are for reading the
seconds and the minutes, there are 60 of them on
the face of the clock.

4Reading the time
60 seconds 1 minute Every time the second hand
ticks from 12 around to 12 again Then one Minute
passed.
Seconds
Finish
5Reading the time
You have learnt that every time the second hand
moves 60 times around the clock face one minute
has passed by.
Minutes
So every time one minute passes by the minute
hand will move forward one minute on the clock
face also.

6Reading the time
Minutes
Let us change the time showing on the clock, and
make it 6 oclock
Finish
7Reading the time
The clock is now showing the time 6 oclock, the
large hand is on the 12 when it is there this is
something oclock. As the small hour hand is on
the 6 then it is 6 oclock.
Minutes
Now imagine the second hand has moved forward
from the 12 to the 12 again, you have learnt that
a minute has passed by.
Look at the clock now
Finish
8Reading the time
Now you can see that the large minute hand has
moved forward one minute. And as the second hand
moves on to the 12 again, another minute has
passed by making the time 2 minutes passed 6
oclock.
Minutes
Finish
9Reading the time
Now you can see that the large minute hand has
moved forward 2 minutes. So now you have learnt
that every time the second hand moves from the 12
or oclock position to the 12 again, one minute
has passed. You now know that every time a minute
passes, the large minute hand moves forward one
division on the clock face.
Minutes
Finish
10Reading the time
Now lets look at the hour hand, the second hand
moves fastest around the clock, the minute hand
moves a lot slower. As the minute hand moves from
the 12 or oclock position on to the 12 again, 1
hour has passed by
Hours
Look at the clock after 1 hour has passed by.
Finish
11Reading the time
Now the clock is reading 7 oclock because the
minute hand has moved forward from the 12 or
oclock position around to the 12 again, making
that 1 hour has passed by. So the hour hand has
also moved forward one hour, from the 6 oclock
position to the 7 oclock position.
Hours
60 seconds 1 minute 60 minutes 1 hour
Every time the second hand moves forward 60 times
the minute hand moves forward by one minute. And
every time the minute hand moves forward 60 times
the hour hand moves by one hour.
Finish
12Reading the time
The 12 is also known as the oclock position just
like on the clock face now, we read this as 7
oclock

We also have Quarter past the hour, Half past the
hour and Quarter to the hour

13Reading the time
The 12 is also known as the oclock position just
like on the clock face now, we read this as 7
oclock. If you said Quarter past seven it would
look like this.

Notice the hour hand is also showing half way
between the 7 and the 8
Or Quarter to! Because the minute hand has gone
past the half past 7 position, you will now say
Quarter to 8
Half past 7

16Reading the time
Oclock
Quarter to 8
Quarter past
The hour hand is almost on the 8 now, this is why
you would say Quarter to 8
Moving on to the oclock position again.

17Reading the time
Now that you know about the actions of the
different hands of the clock, lets us do some
telling the time.
