Questions Limitations of what is available
now? Dominated by MCT - few manufacturers Photov
oltaic only to 12 um - but in big arrays PC -
good to 20 um but would be very for large
format - if possible
3
Questions What could be available now? Blocked
Impurity Band - 2-100 um (but 4K, maybe slow
too) Custom MCT cheap off the shelf RT
microbolometers/pyroelectric
4
Questions What is not currently addressed? High
speed array readout capability Very high
response time (ps) (including for FEL
diagnostics) Near Background Limited performance
across wider range
5
  • Questions
  • What might be available in in the longer term?
  • New readout integrated circuits - new approaches.
    Do not currentlymatch our requirements.
  • Superconducting detectors - interesting but lots
    of questions
  • Superconducting SPC beyond 3um
  • Array construction (1D and 2D)
  • Is 3 ps response really achievable
  • Dynamic range?

6
  • Questions
  • Who is based placed to develop these?
  • Custom large MCT - restricted largely to military
    suppliers or Qinetiq
  • Custom PC MCT - few other suppliers - expensive
    hand made
  • Superconducting - requires international
    industrial-academic collaborations
  • CCLRC capabilities for readout

7
  • Questions
  • What new systems would have most impact?
  • Longer wavelength response big arrays (beyond 12
    um)
  • Faster readout big arrays (maybe 10x faster to
    start)
  • Questions
  • Who might fund this?
  • EU? Facility Development? INTAS? Collaboration
    with instrument manufacturers? Joint projects
    with other synchrotron sources?
  • But could be serious money...

8
But... Should determine more clearly what are
the science drivers in this area. This will
determine pixel sizes, speeds, response times
wavelength range...
