Title: Which heats faster, land or water
1Which heats faster, land or water?
- Science experiment
- Arranged by
- Rebecca Peterson
- GMS 6th grade
2Purpose To discover which heats faster, Land or
Water.
- Materials needed
- Beaker of sand and beaker of water
- Two thermometers
- Two tripods
- Two alcohol burners
- Two blocks of wood
- Two wire screens
- Ring stand and clamp
3Set up the materials
4Make a copy of this chart to mark down your
results.
- Minutes Temperature of sand Temperature of
water - 0 minutes
- 1 minute
- 2 minutes
- 3 minutes
- 4 minutes
- 5 minutes
- 6 minutes
- 7 minutes
5Read the thermometers before you light the
burners.Write the temperatures down on the chart
at 0 minutes
6Safety note IF the sand reaches a temperature of
about 68 degrees C or 150 degrees F before 7
minutes, put out both flames. Use the
temperature readings up to the point.
7After double checking all equipment
- Light the burners.
- After one minute, read the thermometers. Write
down the temperatures on the chart. - Repeat this checking of the temperature every
minute and write down the temperature on the
chart each time for the next 6 minutes. - Put out the flames.
8Answer these questions on a separate piece of
paper.
- 1. What was the temperature of the sand before
it was heated? - 2. What was the temperature of the sand after it
was heated for 7 minutes? - 3. How many degrees hotter did the sand become?
9- 4. What was the temperature of the water before
it was heated? - 5. What was the temperature of the water after
it was heated for 7 minutes? - 6. How many degrees hotter did the water become?
10Conclusion
- This experiment shows that Sand heats up
- ( faster or slower ) than water.
- From this experiment we can see that land heats
up ( faster or slower ) than water.
