Title: A Drop in the Bucket

1
A Drop in the Bucket
  • Project WET

2
Step 1
  • Observe the 1 liter of water in the beaker (How
many ml are in a liter?)
  • This represents all of the water on Earth.
  • Where is most of the water on Earth located?

3
Step 2
  • Pour 30 ml of the liter of water into your
    graduated cylinder.
  • This represents Earths fresh water, which is
    about 3 of the total.
  • The remaining 970 ml (97) of water represents
salt water found in oceans. Set this water aside.

4
Step 3
  • Pour 10 ml of fresh water from the graduated
    cylinder into a plastic cup.
  • This 10 ml of water represents non-frozen fresh
water. Only 2.5 ml of this is surface water the
    rest is underground.
  • The 20 ml of water left in the graduated cylinder
represents water that is frozen in ice caps and
    glaciers. Set this water aside.

5
Question
  • What are some reasons why the 10 ml of
  • fresh water left may be unfit or unusable
  • for human consumption and use?

6
Last Step
  • Use the eyedropper to take one drop of water from
the remaining 10 ml and release one drop into
    your bucket.
  • This represents clean, fresh water that is not
polluted or otherwise unavailable for use.
  • This precious drop, about .003 of the total of
all water on Earth, must be managed properly.
