The Beginning

• Born August 1, 10 BCE
• Where In Gaul
• Family He was the youngest child of Drusus and
  Antonia. Grandfather was Augustas and his uncle
  was Tiberius.
• Born with several disabilities
• Speech defect
• A limp
• A tremor

Growing Up

• He was shunned from community because of his
  disabilities.
• He started a scholarly life.
• Wrote several books about Etruscans and
  Carthaginians.
• Out of all his siblings, he was the only one not
  adopted by Augustas, instead Augustas made him a
  priest, but not for the government.

How He Became Emperor

• One day Claudius was in the palace. That very
  day, Caligula was murdered. The guards in the
  palace were off killing everyone they saw.
  Claudius, scared out of his mind went to hide
  behind the curtains. When a Praetorian guard
  came over and saw Claudius behind the curtains he
  took Claudius and made him emperor.

What He Did For Religion

• Created soothsayers. They were fortune tellers
  and prophets from Etruria.
• He accepted Jews and cults to avoid fighting.

What Did He Do??

• First he took down all statues of Caligula and
  removed his name from all public displays.
• Tried to undo all of Caligulas mistakes.
• Brought back exiles and lowered the high taxes
  Caligula had made.

• Built a harbor at Ostria.

Governmental Changes

• Soon he became known as The Father of the
  Senate, but he insisted people not call him
  that because that title was too flattering.

• Raised the social rank of senators who served a
  long time that were also patricians.
• He passed laws that made it illegal for
  punishment for people who owed debts.
• Made it illegal for people to give children loans.

Marriages

• His first marriage was to Plautia Urgulanilla.
• Then to Aelia Partina.
• Then he married Messilina, it ended in 48 BE when
  Messilina married another man in public! She and
  her new spouse were executed.
• Then he married his niece Agrippina, who soon
  took part in killing Claudius.

Death

• Sadly, Claudius died in 54 CE.
• He was killed by his wife, Agrippina. She killed
  him by feeding him a poisonous mushroom.
• We will miss Claudius.

Why He Is Most Powerful?

• Claudius was a very powerful person as the
  emperor of Rome. He did so many great things
  even with the disabilities he faced.
• Claudius took part in the invasion of Britain in
  43 CE.
• Conquered parts of Britain, something Julius
  Caesar couldnt do.
• Expanded the Roman empire geographically
• He made many governmental changes
• He reorganized the supply of grain in Rome
• And many other great tasks.
• Claudius was a very powerful person who made
  many changes that were mostly good for everyone.
