Title: Nov' 3 12 Angry Men, A Trial by Jury

1
Nov. 3 --12 Angry Men, A Trial by Jury
  • Class will begin with the midterms being returned
    and discussed.
  • Make sure to watch 12 AM in original b/w version
and to read A Trial by Jury.
  • Questions to be discussed in plenary (not
    groups).
  • What do Twelve Angry Men (original version) and
ATMP have in common? (hint this is a question
    about visual recognition).

2
12 Angry Men, Trial by Jury
  • 2. A review of the course to this point. With
which one of the following characters do you most
    identify? Why?
  • i) Erin Gruwell, ii) Ken Lay, iii) Jeff Skilling,
iv) Sherron Watkins, v) Bethany McLean, vi) Mayor
John Pappas, Kevin Calhoun, vii) Mike Wallace,
viii) Lowell Bergman, ix) Mike Wallace, x) Jeff
Wigand, xi) Carl Bernstein, xii) Bob Woodward,
xiii) Ben Bradlee, xiv) any other. Explain why.

12 Angry Men, A Trial by Jury
  • 3. Compare/contrast jury decision-making with
small group decision-making in business or
government, for example in corporate boards or
cabinets, or other groups you are familiar with.
Bear in mind the rationale for practices such as
the size of the jury, choosing of jurors,
    sequestering of the jury.
  • 4. What management skills does juror number 8
(the architect, played by Peter Fonda in the 1957
film) display? What skills does Graham Burnett
report that he displayed? Compare and contrast
    them two.

12 Angry Men, A Trial by Jury
  • 5. Burnett concluded his book with the words
  • writing it has done the thing I wanted so
badly from the start it has made the trial into
words, a thing to read, to interpret, to circle
back through. A text. Like art. Meaning something
different to each person. Keeping the large
    questions open.
  • But the trial was not that.
  • What does he mean? Do you agree?
