TAI TUTKIMUSLAITOS TAI RESEARCH CENTRE
USING THE WWW TO SUPPORT PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
CONTROLLABILITY
The interactive WWW-based LUCOS Visualization
Client supports the improvement of product
development controllability in several ways.
ARCHITECTURE
The LUCOS tools are based on a distributed
client-server architecture, the clients of which
can be used from anywhere in the Internet.
The Visualization Client makes effective use of
all measurement data in an enterprise. Dispersed
knowledge is accessible in one easy-to-access
location allowing corporate-wide communication.

VISUALIZATION CLIENT - ViCA
The ViCA client application makes a revolutionary
use of the WWW to support data visualization
  • Developed in Java and accessed in the WWW
  • Users can build their own visualization panels
  • Numerous different chart types to choose from
  • Interactive, always up-to-date visualization
  • Supports navigation within and between levels

ViCA stores all definitions in the Metrics Server
and updates the panels with the latest data every
time the panels are accessed.
METRICS SERVER - MESS
The Metrics Server acts as a central manager for
all LUCOS Tools. It is a HTTPD-like multithreaded
server developed in C, supporting user
authentication and all common database
operations. All clients communicate with the MESS
using a protocol based on HTTP.
DATA SOURCES
No additional data collection is required. All
existing measurement data sources can be used and
combined in visualization.
  • Data sources can be distributed anywhere in the
    Internet
  • Data sources are connected to MESS using external
    data modules
  • Support for Solid, Sybase, and any ODBC compliant
    DBMS
  • Support for MS Project and MS Excel
