3CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- What is Model Rocketry?
-
- It is the designing, building, and flying
- of small rockets made of paper,
- plastic, balsa wood or any other non-
- metallic product.
- It is rocket science in miniature.
- The same designing, building, and
- launch operations skills needed to
- launch real rockets apply to model
- rocketry.
13
4CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- CAP Model Rocketry Program is the next step after
studying Module 4-Rockets of the Aerospace
Dimensions book - It is designed to cover the basics of rocket
history, rocket science, rocket building, and the
safe launch and recovery of model rockets - It is designed to get both cadets and Officers
working together - Upon completion, cadets will be recognized as
having leadership skills in the field of model
rocketry
12
5CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- Objectives per CAPR 50-20 15 MAR 04 CAP Model
Rocketry Program - Acquaint CAP cadets with the importance of
rocketry and its role in the future - Increase the cadets knowledge of aerospace
science and motivate them to attain an even
greater knowledge of aerospace sciences - Employ an interest in model rocketry to enrich
the total development of CAP cadets - Provide activities and opportunities for the
development of aerospace leadership skills - Arouse interest in aerospace careers that require
knowledge of rocketry - Contribute to the development of an understanding
of aerospace power - Lead to the discovery and furtherance of the
individual educational needs of cadets aspiring
to careers in aerospace

6CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- The Program
- Consists of 3 stages (Redstone, Titan, Saturn)
- EACH stage consists of
- A classroom portion
- A 10-question exam
- A building phase
- A flying phase
10
7CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- STAGE 1-REDSTONE
- AE Class on A Brief History of Rocketry and its
Great Pioneers - 10-question quiz and complete Official Witness
Log - Build and Fly both the Fizzy Flyer Goddard
Rocket and complete Official Witness Log-Hands
on Phase - Discuss what was learned as it relates to
rocketry - Complete and Award Redstone Stage Squadron
Commanders Approval certificate
9
8CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- STAGE 2-TITAN
- AE Class on Laws That Govern Rocket Science
- 10-question quiz and fill out Official Witness
Log - Build an entry level commercial single stage
rocket - Build a scale model commercial single stage
rocket - Launch the two Titan-stage kits as an
out-of-meeting activity and complete the
Official Witness Log - Complete and Award Titan Stage Squadron
Commanders Approval certificate
8
9CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- STAGE 3-SATURN
- AE Class on the Model Rocket Safety Code,
Altitude Tracking, and Model Rocket Engines - 10-question quiz plus Model Rocket Safety Code
quiz and fill out Official Witness Log - Build a Payload Carrier rocket
- Launch the Saturn-stage kit as an out-of-meeting
activity and complete the Official Witness Log - Complete and Award Saturn Stage Squadron
Commanders Approval certificate - Upon approval of the Squadron Commander award the
CAP Rocketry Badge. If the cadet has earned the
Mitchell Award a silver star may be attached to
the Goddard Achievement Ribbon

10CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- Time Frame
- 9 classes or build sessions and 2 out of meeting
activities to complete the program - We will begin in January 08 and finish May 08
- Costs
- Approximately 40.00 for all rockets and motors
- Squadron will pick up ONE-HALF the costs for
cadets (Officers will pay full costs) - Squadron will pick up ancillary costs (building
supplies, recovery wadding, etc). - Actual cost for cadets, 20.00
6
11CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM
- TARC
- If there is further interest in CAP rocketry, the
Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) is
available - Every year the challenge is a little different.
Basically a rocket is designed and built by a
team to meet a specific goal such as carrying a
specific type of payload to a specific altitude,
and a specific flight duration - There are local/regional competitions.
- Regional winners go to the national
- competition where college scholarship
- monies are awarded to the national
- TARC winners
