Chess Lessons Practice
  • Group Bs
  • Continue chess lesson with Dinosaur Chess to
learn how the Queen, King, and Pawn move
  • group practices
  • Group As
  • before making a move, remember the 7-up rule ?
  • practice checkmates with
  • King 2 Rooks
  • King Queen
  • King 1 Rook
  • King 2 Bishops
  • King Bishop Knight

3
How The Queen Moves
  • The Queen is the most powerful piece
  • It can move in any direction any number of
squares as long as no other piece blocks its path
(the Queen can not leap over any pieces)
  • The Queen captures the same way it moves. When
it captures an opponents piece, it displaces
that piece (occupies the square of the captured
    piece)
  • In the diagrams, the dots indicate where the
    white Queen can move to
  • In the lower diagram, the white Queen can capture
black Pawns and Bishop, but NOT the black Rook or
    Knight

4
How The King Moves
  • The King moves one square in any direction (see
    upper diagram)
  • It can not leap over any other piece
  • The King captures the same way it moves. When it
captures an opponents piece, it displaces that
piece (occupies the square of the captured piece)
  • In the diagrams, the dots indicate where the
    white King can move to
  • In the lower diagram, the white King can capture
the black Rook, but not the black Bishop
  • Note that the King can not move to any square
that it is under attack. In the lower diagram,
the King can not move to these 3 squares because
they are under attack by the black Rook Bishop

5
How The Pawn Moves
  • The Pawn is the only piece that is limited to
moving in only one direction straight ahead
  • With one exception (noted below), a Pawn moves
one square forward unless its path is blocked by
one of his own or an opponents piece
  • When a Pawn is moved from its opening position -
even if this occurs late in the game - that Pawn
on its first move has the option of moving 1
    square or 2 squares
  • The Pawn's capturing method differs from the way
it moves. The Pawn moves by advancing straight
along a file. In capturing, however, the Pawn can
take an opponent piece only if that piece is
located on either one square forward to the right
or left as indicated on the diagram (the black
Pawn can capture the white Rook or Knight, but
NOT the white Bishop or Queen)
  • In the diagrams, the dots indicate where the
    white Pawn can move to

6
7-Up Rule ?
  • Before making a move to a square, remember the
7-Up rule ? (looking for opponents threats in
all 7 directions on that square)
  • Up
  • Down
  • Left
  • Right
  • Diagonally Left
  • Diagonally Right
