Title: DEFINITION OF INNOVATION

1
DEFINITION OF INNOVATION
  • INNOVATION GENERATION ACTION

IMPLEMENTATION / APPLICATION
INVENTION
2
Companies and managers, countries and their
people face an increasing task of self renewal
increasing because the pace of technological
change continues to increase. We must all
become better innovators as a result inventing
new products, and reinventing our own skills and
jobs as well.
3
We are all technologists, everyone of us who
knows how to do something in a certain way and
uses tools to do it, be they pencils, or personal
computers, machine tools or video
screens.Teachers, auto designers, builders,
language labs, whatever we do, we participate in
the technology of our age.

  • Systems thinking

6
DEFINITION
ONESystems thinking is a way of helping a
person to view the world, including its
organisations from a broad perspective that
include the structures, patterns and events
rather than just the events themselves. This
broad view helps one to identify the real causes
of issues and know where to work to address
them McNamara.
7

DEFINITION TWO Systems thinking is a way of
thinking about, and a language for describing
and understanding, the forces and
interrelationships that shape the behavior of
systems. This discipline helps us see how to
change systems more effectively. Peter
Senge
8

DEFINITION THREE Systems thinking is a
discipline for seeing the structures that
underlie complex situations. Ultimately, it
simplifies life by helping us to see the deeper
patterns lying beneath the events and the
details Peter Senge

Quotation In an orchestra the players are not
there to play solos as prima donnas, each trying
to catch the ear of the listener. They are there
to support each other. Has your workplace been
an orchestra of players, each supporting each
other, or collection of prima donnas? Demi
ng
10

Quotation Each part can affect the system, each
part has an effect on other parts and every
possible subgroup of parts can effect the system.
However, no part can have an independent effect
on the whole. Deming and Ackoff

COMPONENTS OF A
SYSTEMThese are the factors or elements that
are involved in the process of a system All
those activities that contribute to the
realisation of the systems objectivesAn
organisation must manage its components, but most
importantly it must manage the interactions
between the components to manage the system.
15

Dissecting a system Any attempt to understand a
system by dissecting its components will lead to
the system losing its essential properties.
16

Aim and development A system must have an aim
and development. The statement of the aim
allows the people within the system to understand
what they are working towards. Cooperation
between components is developed and valued
because it will lead to the overall success for
the system and its components.
17
The method of system thinking provides us with
tools for better understanding these difficult
problems. This method requires us to move away
from looking at isolated events and their causes
and start to look at the organisation as a system
made up of interacting parts.
18
Circles of causality
  • Cause Events Effect
  • Unemployment ______ poverty _________ government
    spending
  • Government ________ taxes _________ consumer
  • Spending spending

19
Systems diagrams are powerful tools that help you
to understand how complex systems work. They
help in showing you how a change in one factor
may impact elsewhere. They allow you to model
the way in which complex systems work. They
help you to think through the way in which the
factors within the system interact and feedback
upon themselves.
20

Unhappy with weight
Decrease food consumption
Increase food consumed
hungry
21

Costs too high
Lay off workers
Hire more workers
Workload increases
22
A picture tells the story. And we wonder why we
find ourselves in reoccurring systems. Systems
thinking is a wonderful tool for understanding
the environments you find your self in both
personally and organisationally
23
Human beings are quick problem solvers. From a
evolutionary standpoint this makes sense if a
tiger is bounding toward you, you need to quickly
decide on a cause of action or you wont be
around for too long. Thus quick problem solvers
are the ones who survive.

  • unpack systemically

26
  • Key points in system thinking
  • More attention to interaction than components
  • More long term cooperation
  • More cooperation than fear, blame and internal
    competition
  • Challenge assumptions
  • see patterns
  • see relationships

27
  • Systems thinkers focus on grander interactions
  • Systems thinking is characterised by long term
    vision
  • Cooperation is the goal for systems thinking
    interactions
  • Systems thinking allows the development of
    intrinsic motivation.
  • Group effort is encouraged with participation
    by the workforce

28
Life doesnt come with one problem neatly
separated from the rest. Specialization is
helpful, but youve got to see the web.
29
PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT
  • WHO ARE YOU?

30
WHAT IS SELF LEADERSHIP?
  • IT IS THE ESSENCE OF LEADERSHIP.
  • TAKE STOCK OF OR PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES.
LEADERS MUST REFER TO THEIR OWN PERSONAL PURPOSE,
    VALUES, VISION AND COURAGE.

31
TIPS FOR SELF LEADERSHIP
  • Recognize your stress level
  • Take a daily solo
  • Examine your job
  • Renew a relationship with a mentor
  • Challenge yourself to get out of your comfort
    zone
  • Balance your life style
