Luivs Concept
  • Nature-deficit disorder describes the human
costs of alienation from nature, among them
diminished use of senses, attention difficulties,
and higher rates of physical and emotional
    illiness

7
Louvs Tree House
  • This tree house became our galleon, our
spaceship, our Fort Apache, and from it we could
see out ober the cornfield and north to the
    great, dark woods.
  • We probably learned more from our failures. More
than from suceesWe learned from practicing, one
of the essential principles of engineering you
can solve any large or complex problem by
breaking it down into smaller, simpler problems.

Robin Moore

9
Moores Concept and Concern
  • Experiences with nature help to build the
    cognitive constructs necessary for sustained
    intellectual development and stimulate the
inagination by supplying the child with free
    space and materials.
  • There is an international trend toward investing
public funds in sports areas rather than
multi-choice space for free play. When a park is
graded to create a play field, children gain
soccer capacity, but lose places for self
    directed play.

Meditative Values of Trees for Children

  • A new tree had grown from
  • the stump and its trunk had grown along the
ground until it reached a place where there were
no wash lines above it. Then it had started to
grow towards the sky again. The fir tree that
the Nolans had cherished with waterings and
manurings, had long since sickened and died. But
this tree in the yard -- this tree men had
chopped downthis tree that they built a bonfire
around, trying to burn up its stump --this tree
    lived!

Nearly every morning I go to the attic to
blow the stuffy air out of my lungs, from my
favorite spot on the floor I look up at the blue
sky and the bare chestneut tree, on whose
branches little raindrops shine, appearing like
silver, and at the seagulls and other birds as
they glide on the wind. As long as this exists, I
thought, and I may to see it, this sunshine, the
cloudless skies, while this lasts I cannot be
unhappy. Anne Frank February 23, 1944

Advocating for Children

Parens Patriae
  • A doctrine that grants the power and authority of
    the state to children
  • The parens patriae doctrine is applied in the
    treatment of children,
  • because they are unable legally to manage their
    affairs.
  • States may invoke parens patriae to protect the
health, comfort, and welfare of children.
  • For a state to have standing to sue under the
doctrine, it must be more than a nominal party
without a real interest of its own and must
articulate an interest apart from the interests
    of particular private parties.
