La définition de la folie, cest refaire
toujours la même chose en sattendant à un
résultat différent.
Albert Einstein
  • The definition of insanity is doing the same
thing over and over and expecting different
    results.

Paradigm Shifts in Coaching
  • Functional training
  • Warm up and stretching
  • Transfer of strength
  • Speed training
  • Female athletes hormonal adaptations
  • Coaching the developmental athlete
  • Periodization
  • Coaching the elite athlete the diminishing
    return phase
  • Regeneration
  • Chrono-nutrition / hydration
  • Hygiene or immuno reaction

12
What is a Paradigm ?
  • One that is worthy of imitation or duplication
    (Rogets)
  • An example or a pattern
  • We all have our own paradigms
  • Resistant to change?
  • "Your past success guarantees nothing !"
  • Back to insanity

13
Paradigm Shifts in Coaching 1Functional
Training
  • Is integrated, multi-planar movement that
    involves acceleration, deceleration and
    stabilization.
  • Most conditioning programmes are uniplanar
  • Very little is dedicated core stabilisation
training and eccentric training in all three
planes of motion (sagittal, frontal and
    transverse Clark 2001.p.261)

Integrated Training
  • Core stabilization training
  • Neuromuscular stabilization training
  • Multi-planar training
  • Training with optimum posture
  • Training for optimum muscle balance
  • Training for optimal muscle function
  • Training for optimal muscle contraction spectrum
  • Core stabilization is the foundation upon which
all other aspects of integrated training are
    based.

16
Kinetic chain
  • Is an integrated functional unit. The kinetic
chain is made up the soft tissue system (muscle,
ligament, tendon and fascia), neural system, and
    articular system.
  • Each of these systems works independently to
allow structural and functional efficiency. If
any of the systems do not work efficiently,
compensations and adaptations occur in the other
    systems.
  • These compensations and adaptations lead to
    tissue overload, decreased performance and
    predictable patterns of injury.

17
Implications
  • Huge implication - immediate action needed !
  • Rehabilitation - well done
  • Prehabilitiation - prevention ?
  • Preventative sport medicine?
  • Musculo-skeletal screening
  • Body alignment (foot, ankle, knee, hip,
    vertebrae, shoulder)
  • Muscle imbalances
  • Optimal flexibility ranges (ROM)
  • Regular and frequent screening before maturation
  • Regular yearly screening after maturation
  • Sport medical passport / report card?

18
Paradigm Shifts in Coaching 2.Warm up and
Stretching
  • Objectives of warm up ?
  • Flexibility / Stretching (static, ballistic, PNF,
    dynamic mobility)

19
  • Stretching practice
  • Current research demonstrates that static
stretching prior to dynamic activity decrease
    motor unit recruitment, motor unit
synchronization and rate of force production.
  • Thus, no static stretching during warm up
  • Do it after cool down or as part of cooling down
  • Or 2 hours prior or after training and/or
    competition activities.
  • Why ?

20
Paradigm Shifts in Coaching 3.
  • Transfer of strength and power
  • Little research and knowledge on transfer
  • Greg Wilson, 1995 Northern Star University
  • Daniel Baker, ARL
  • Ian King, Brisbane
  • Complex training

21
Paradigm Shifts in Coaching 4.
  • Speed training all year round!
  • Assisted ( acceleration )
  • Resisted ( fly )
  • Regular
  • Complex ( mixed a combination of assisted,
resisted and regular training depending on short
    term training objectives )
  • When?
