Presentation Topics
  • Our view to QoS - definitions of terms used
  • The definition of Acceptability
  • Concepts for Measuring User Acceptance of NQoS
  • Examination of QoS and AoS within Jupiter 2 T4/T5
  • Overview about methods used
  • Summary and outlook

3
QoS - a user related term
EURESCOM Project P807 Jupiter 2
  • Quality of Service (QoS) The collective effect
of service performance which determines the
degree of satisfaction of a user of the service.

(ITU-T Rec. E.800)
  • It is mentioned in a note to this definition that
QoS is characterised by the combined aspects of
  • service support performance
  • service operability performance
  • serveability performance
  • service security performance

4
The network related aspects of QoS
EURESCOM Project P807 Jupiter 2
For the work within JUPITER 2 network related
Tasks the term Network QoS as a part of QoS is
defined as follows
  • Network QoS (NQoS)The end-to-end
characteristics offered by a network delivering
    data (between end-systems).
  • Network performance (NP)The actual (measured)
characteristics of the network its ability to
    meet the offered Network QoS.

Acceptability of service (AoS) for
telecommunications
EURESCOM Project P807 Jupiter 2
The acceptance (Acceptance Ratio of actual users
in the target group) of an existing service can
be measured easily counting the users of this
service. However, a reference value the
quantity of the target group regarding the
investigated service has to be determined for
evaluating the acceptability.
  • Acceptability of Service (AoS) Multidimensional
property of a service, describing how readily a
customer will use the service, represented as the
ratio of the number of potential users to the
    quantity of the target group.

Task 4 / Task 5 Process
EURESCOM Project P807 Jupiter 2
Use the network QoS technologies to achieve
network performance that meets users requirements
12
QoS Technologies under study
EURESCOM Project P807 Jupiter 2
  • How do we use these network building blocks to
    meet the Users Requirements?
  • RSVP (Resource ReSeVation Protocol)
  • RSVP over ATM
  • IP Differential Services
  • Winsock2 (support for native ATM and RSVP)
  • Queuing technologies (Weighted Fair Queuing, etc)
  • H.323 Gatekeeper
  • Multimedia Conference Manager
  • Subnet Bandwidth Manager
  • IEEE802.1p

13
Used methodology for streaming video quality
EURESCOM Project P807 Jupiter 2
  • Single stimulus presentation like ITU-T Rec. 920
  • short, tightly controlled test sequences and
    longer natural test sequences
  • standard or realistic audio-, video- and
    audio-visual related task
  • pre-task questionnaire about quality and
    acceptance
  • pre-test questionnaire
  • 5-point category scale
  • Yes/No question for acceptance
  • 12 or more subjects
