  • Polynesians begin settling New Zealand around
    1,000 AD
  • A tribe called the Moriori settle a group of
    islands just off the coast around the same time

  • 1642- Abel Tasman (Dutch) comes to New Zealand
  • Never lands on the islands
  • Violent clash with the natives-now called the
    Maori

1769- James Cook (this guy gets around) comes to
New Zealand
At the same time, a French explorer reaches NZ,
but they never know the other is there

  • 1840- Treaty of Waitangi
  • Maori sign treaty with British allowing
    settlement
  • Europeans start coming in huge numbers
  • Causes problems for Maori

  • 1843-72- The Land Wars
  • Conflicts between European settlers the Maori
    over rapid expansion of colonization
  • Many Maori wanted a king to rule over their
    tribes, but the British opposed nay threat to
    their rule

  • 1872- Maori that had converted to Christianity
    persuade the other tribes to submit to the
    British
  • More settlers come Maori are pushed to the
    fringes on some parts of the islands

  • 1907- NZ become a dominion of Great Britain

  • New Zealand becomes a devoted member of the
    British empire
  • Sends troops to fight in the Boer War (Africa)
  • ANZAC troops gain fame during WWI at Gallipoli

  • NZ was the first country to give women the right
    to vote- 1893
  • Also one of the first countries to provide Social
    Security care for the elderly

  • Government- Queen Elizabeth is more involved than
    in Australia
  • Her assent is needed for a law to pass (it is
    almost never refused)
  • A governor general is appointed by the Queen to
    act on her behalf
  • A single house parliament creates laws

    Australia
  • Greatly disadvantaged compared to other groups
  • Now around 60 of Maori live in cities
    relations bet. Europeans Maori are strained but
    improving
