3When you add two numbers together you are putting
two parts together to make a new total. For
example, we know that we have 5 fingers on our
right hand and 5 fingers on our left hand. To
figure out how many fingers we have total, we
have to add them together to get our new total.
We have a total of 10 fingers.

represents the first number in the problem and
the blue represents the second number. When they
are added together you get the total of 9, which
is where the arrow stops on the number line.

The first box contains 4 marbles and the second
has 5. When we add these two boxes together we
get the new total of 9 marbles, which is how many
are in the final box.
