  • Sociology developed in the 1800s.
  • The Industrial Revolution led to the study.
  • The IR led to a more urbanized society.
  • Many social problems came about and personal
    freedoms led to revolutions.

Early Years
  • Auguste Comte- He is the father of Sociology. He
    thought there were two forces in societysocial
    static and social dynamic.
  • Herbert Spencer- Society is a set of
    interdependent parts working together. Social
    Darwinist. Societies will have unrest and change
    over time to achieve stability.

  • Karl Marx- Focused on structure through the
    economy. Two classes were present..the
    bourgeoisie and proletariat. Led to the conflict
    theory.
  • Emile Durkheim- He thought the different
    functions of society held it together. Only
    observable features.

  • Functionalist- Society is a set of interrelated
    parts that work together to produce stability.
    People agree what is best for society and work
    together to make sure things run smoothly.
    Dysfunction, manifest function, latent function.

  • Conflict- Focuses on forces in society that
    promote competition and change. It doesnt have
    to be violentdecision making in the family.
    Competition over scarce resources leads to
    conflict.

  • Interactionist- Focuses on how individuals
    interact with one another. Study symbols in
    societies. Symbolic interaction.
