Aim
  • To increase informal physical activity and
    structured play within primary school playgrounds
    through developing year 5 6 Play Leaders and
    widening the activities on offer at lunchtimes
    and breaks.
  • To develop confident and competent young leaders
    with leadership skills such as communication,
    organisation, motivation and the raising of
    self-esteem.
  • To encourage leaders onto the Baverstock SSSP
    leadership pathway and who will then eventually
    go onto leadership and volunteer roles within the
    sporting world.

1. Structured Play
  • Increases participation in purposeful play and
    physical activity.
  • Improves behaviour, especially during breaks
    lunchtimes.
  • Provides a good learning environment in the
    playground by organising different activity zones
    so that pupils feel safe and can play freely in
    adequate space and focus on what theyre doing
    thus increasing skill levels.
  • Creates an improved climate for learning in the
    classroom, especially in classes that immediately
    follow, as a result of increased concentration
    and confidence.
  • Decrease incidents of anti-social behaviour in
    the playground.
  • Improves attendance, especially amongst
    vulnerable pupils through the reduction of
    problems associated with bullying and
    inappropriate behaviour.
  • Supports the work of adults and staff within the
    school.
  • Provides the opportunity for older children to
    work with younger children thus promoting
    integration and social inclusion

Baverstock SSP Leadership Ladder
  • A progressing system of leadership and
    accreditation that all young people can access at
    any level at any time across the partnership
    within both PE beyond.
  • Aid the transition between KS2 KS3
  • Pupils must complete an agreed number of tasks to
    progress onto the next stage. Evidence needs to
    be centrally recorded.
  • The ladder will aim to increase the number of
    young people involved in leadership and
    volunteering and encourage young people to show
    initiative, independence and a desire to get to
    the next level.
  • Ultimately the young people will be making a
    positive contribution to their school and
    community.
  • To work, the ladder must be adopted by individual
    schools and embedded into their work.

Play LeadersLearning to Lead
  • The Training
  • 20 Year 5 6 selected following a route chosen
    by the school (application / nomination etc)
  • One school mentor identified (lunchtime
    supervisor / play leader / class teacher with
    specific role etc) who is fully on board with the
    programme and will help to deploy the Play
    Leaders during lunchtimes.
  • Training will be led by SSCOs and based on the
    Sports Leaders UK Young Leaders resource which
    focuses on specific skills such as giving
    instructions, the organisation of people and
    equipment and the use of space.
  • Follow up training will be provided where
    possible to re-inspire and motivate the play
    leaders and to provide new ideas and games.
  • A new cohort of Play Leaders can be trained when
    necessary to allow for new leaders to experience
    the programme and established leaders can help to
    mentor them.

  • The Assessment Incentives
  • Log books supplied to each Play Leader to record
    their experience and signed off daily or weekly
    by mentor.
  • Additionally a register of attendance needs to be
    kept to monitor both the success of the programme
    and the level of achievement of the pupils.
  • Following the training, the Play Leaders can work
    towards the following awards
  • 15 sessions Baverstock Play Leaders Bronze
    Award
  • 25 sessions Baverstock Play Leaders Silver
    Award
  • 35 sessions Baverstock Play Leaders Gold Award
  • Certificates (and a reflective top?) are awarded
    on completion of the training.
  • Badges are available which have to be purchased
    by the partnership to recognise the Play Leaders
    commitment and achievement.
  • It is hoped to hold a Play Leaders mini
    conference in 2009 to recognise all leaders who
    achieve the top level awards.

  • Play Managers
  • It is planned that once the programme is off the
    ground, two of the new play leaders from each
    primary school will be chosen to be Play
    Managers, with responsibility for getting the
    group together and reporting anything to the
    teacher in charge.
  • The managers will also sit on a partnership
    primary school sports council to represent their
    schools and bring their ideas to the partnership
    about what sports and activities they would like
    to see introduced in their school.
  • Suggestion boxes will be placed in each school
    and pupils encouraged to submit ideas and
    requests for PE and school sport.
  • School sport notice boards could be introduced
    into schools to enable the Play Managers and
    Leaders to promote new games etc but will also
    enable promotion of other partnership wide sports
    and activities as well as promoting community
    sports clubs.
  • The Play Managers could be responsible for
    selecting new equipment etc.

  • Monitoring Evaluation
  • Initial decisions to be made on what were
    monitoring e.g. number of behavioural incidents /
    concentration in class after lunch. A baseline
    needs to be taken and a decision made on how
    these areas will be monitored.
  • SSCos to report on the number of Play Leaders
    trained in each school and the number of sessions
    undertaken by the new Play Leaders.
  • Photographs and video footage (with permission)
    will also be taken to produce a short DVD to
    promote the scheme in future years.
  • Schools and the Play Leaders will be provided
    with books to monitor any anecdotes, comments and
    evidence. This will include feedback from the
    pupils themselves.

Schools Commitment
  • One PLT Days funding to cover the cost of the
    training, resource, certificate needs to be
    allocated for the project. (A further PLT days
    funding can be claimed by the school if new
    playground equipment is needed).
  • Access to up to 6-hours of the Play Leaders time
    to allow training.
  • A classroom and space (indoor incase of bad
    weather) for the training.
  • A Play Leader Mentor with a remit to support the
    new Play Leaders, monitor and evaluate the
    programme for the school and sign off the log
    books.

Partnership Commitment
  • Development, launch full coordination of the
    Baverstock Play Leaders Programme.
  • Annual training for up to 20 Play Leaders per
    school.
  • Support in running an assembly to promote the
    scheme to potential new year 5 6 Play Leaders
    and again to promote the new Play Leaders to the
    rest of the school.
  • Ongoing support for the scheme.
  • Supply of certificates and badges on request.

The Future
  • Baverstock SSP Roll Out
  • The development and deployment of young leaders
    is an a key element of the PE and School Sports
    Strategy (PESSCL) and it is the intention that
    every school within the Baverstock SSP will
    access this opportunity by July 2009.
  • If all 24 primary schools within the partnership
    train 20 pupils this will result in 480 new Play
    Leaders.
  • It is hoped this will also increase the quantity
    and quality of informal activity / structured
    play within each school.
  • Inter Partnership Work
  • Mini-conferences could be held across
    partnerships to bring together the high achieving
    Play Leaders from many different schools.
  • International Work
  • Baverstock Sports College has a link with a
    developing school in South Africa. It is hoped
    that we can take the programme over to South
    Africa to train their Play Leaders following the
    same format.
