Socio-cultural factors

• Ethnicity- people belong to certain cultures and
  this influences our way of thinking and acting
  (Emmitt, Pollock Komescaroff, 2003 p52)
• Class- different groups have particular literacy
  practices they use that differ to other groups.
  This is some cases is an advantage in society

Language Variation

• Different languages- In society there are a
  variety of language used and developed, they
  firstly begin in the home and are developed
  further in the community. Due to Australia being
  a multicultural country, there are numerous
  languages used and it is important that all
  individuals are given the same opportunity of
  learning, despite there use of language.

Implications for Schooling

• Different Social Practices- among schools there
  are different programs developed and some schools
  are more achievable than others. But aim is to
  make school home-like.
• Role of expert other- Adults such as teachers
  play an important role in expanding the knowledge
  and understanding of children. Making teachers
  parent-like. Teachers have a lot of
  responsibility and need to accept different
  languages.
