Title: Interoperable Data Formats

1
Interoperable Data Formats
  • International Ice Charting Working Group VI
  • Ottawa, October 2005

2
Proposal for a Near Term Objective Toward a
Global Ice Mapping System
  • Within the next 2 years, all participating Ice
Services agree on one common database schema for
    their ice mapping systems

3
Action Item 5.6
  • Clearly define the objective of developing common
data base scheme i.e. seamless customer support
vs ice service interoperability. Outline a
project plan including goals for the first
    technical workshop on the issue

4
The virtual world ice service
5
Ice Service Interoperability
  • Ice Services can easily and seamlessly exchange
    ice chart information
  • Reduce duplication of effort with simple cut
paste from a neighbouring Services chart
  • With appropriate agreements
  • Support production of a common global ice
    analysis
  • Where every service concentrates on the areas it
    knows best

6
Seamless Customer Support
  • A mariner travelling across oceans should be able
to access ice information from different local
authorities in the same manner and with the same
    look and feel
  • Mariners tell us that they do not want to use
special systems to get ice information
  • Electronic Navigation Charts and ECDIS are
rapidly becoming the standard for route planning
    and ship navigation
  • Ice Services should provide ice chart information
in a format compatible with ENCs
  • Electronic chart version of the ice chart
facsimile broadcast standards or GMDSS NAVTEX
    standards

7
  • Ice Service interoperability - Seamless customer
    support
  • Are not mutually exclusive objectives

8
Objectives for Technical Workshop
  • Education
  • To understand better what we mean by
    interoperable data formats
  • To appreciate the benefits
  • Decision
  • Where we want to go with interoperable data
    formats
  • What can we achieve within our own organizations
and what can we achieve together
  • Commitment to Action
  • To develop action plans, that we can all commit
    to, for going forward
