GCSE Physical Education
1 year course in Year 11 (1 option)

How many lessons? (GCSE)
  • 4 lessons ( 1 hr) per 2 weeks
  • Of those 2 practical, 2 theory (classroom 2hr
    per week)
  • Course completed in 1 Year (Year 11)

How the course works? (GCSE)
  • 40 theory work.
  • Assessed by an exam at the end of year (1hr ¾)
  • 10 Analysis of Performance.
  • A speaking test in which you would answer
    questions about 1 sport of your choice
  • Written piece of coursework Personal Exercise
    Programme (PEP)
  • 50 practical work. Of which
  • 25 is coursework e.g. How you perform in lessons
  • 25 final practical exam at the end of year

Theory Work (40)
  • 2 lesson per week (1 hr x 2)
  • Homework and tests will take place every week
  • Including topics such as
  • anatomy (learning about the body),
  • reasons for taking part in exercise
  • training methods
  • diet and hygiene
  • safety and injuries

Analysis of Performance (10)
  • Coursework (PEP)
  • A verbal question and answer session with 1
    member of the PE staff on your chosen sport.
    Answer questions on
  • Rules and regulations
  • Tactics and techniques
  • Training methods for your sport
  • Safety and leadership

Practical Work (50)
  • We will cover a variety of sports over the
    course.
  • You then choose your 4 best sports.
  • However, at least 1 must be an individual sport
    e.g. athletics, fitness or trampolining
  • Any sports played to a high standard out of
    school would be considered.
  • All lessons would have both skill development and
    game awareness.

Should I do GCSE Physical Education?
  • Have I
  • had regular participation in games and PE
  • brought my kit regularly
  • shown high level of effort in PE
  • attended school sports clubs
  • behaved well in lessons

So, what must I think about before choosing this
course?
  • It is physically demanding.
  • It is time-consuming - You will be expected to
    attend extra-curricular school clubs.
  • You will need extra school PE kit and to bring it
    to all lessons.
  • You need to be interested in more than 1 sport.
  • Do I enjoy sports lessons? If yes, it is an
    enjoyable and varied course.

BTEC Courses - PE
  • BTEC Diploma 2 years takes 2 option blocks
    (worth 4 GCSEs)

  • 4 lessons ( 1 hr) per 2 weeks
  • Both practical and theory lessons
  • Certificate completed in 1 year, diploma
    completed in 2 years.

The Course
  • Passing the Certificate is equivalent to 2
    GCSEs.
  • Passing the Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs
  • You can gain either a pass (C), merit (B) or
    Distinction (A)
  • Assessed by
  • Assignments (Coursework in every module), NO
    EXAMS!!!

Things to consider!!
  • You will be set homework / coursework every week
    and be expected to hand it in on time.
  • You will have to work to deadlines.
  • It is time-consuming - You will be expected to
    attend extra-curricular school clubs.

Should I do BTEC Sport?
  • Have I shown commitment in PE.
  • Have I brought PE kit regularly
  • Have I shown high effort and a positive attitude.
  • Am I better at coursework than examinations?
  • Would I like to lead on to further PE
    qualification?

If you want to do a PE course
  • You must see a member of the PE staff for advice!
  • You need to attend parents evening and see the
    PE staff!
  • If you are unsure ask!!!!!
