Objectives To verify whether a depleted 36V
lead-acid battery after a short period charging
can deliver enough power for engine cranking at
10ºC, -20ºC, or 30ºC.

Testing Setup . Three 12V batteries
(Odyssey PC680 16Ah) are serially connected,
and put inside of a cold chamber. . Both
chamber temperature and battery terminal
temperature are measured. . Battery voltage
and current are measured. . Cranking load is an
electrical motor with constant power control. .
Sampling rate when charging is 50 point/second,
and sampling rate when cranking is 100
points/sec.

Testing Procedure . Setting the battery
chamber temperature at 10ºC, -20ºC, or 30ºC .
Discharging the battery at about 1kw until the
battery terminal voltage drops to 21V .
Charging the battery at about 1kw for either 5
minutes or 10 minutes . Cranking the battery
at about 7kw for 6 seconds

Conclusion After 5 minutes charging, a
depleted 36V 16Ah lead-acid battery can deliver
average 6kw for 6 seconds at 30ºC.
