Topics Covered in this Presentation
  • The Greenhouse effect
  •     8.5.4- Describe the greenhouse effect
  •     8.5.5- Identify the main greehouse gases and
    their sources
  •     8.5.6- Explain the molecular mechanisms by
which greehouse gases absorb infrared radiation
  •     8.5.7- Analyse absorption graphs to compare
the relative effects of different greenhouse
    gases
  •
  • Surface Heat
  •     8.5.12- Define surface heat capacity Cs
  •     8.5.13- Slove problems on the greenhouse
effect and the heating of planets using a simple
    energy balance climate model
  •

3
Definition- 8.5.4
  • The Greenhouse effect is the process in which
part of the energy from the sun is trapped in our
    atmosphere.
  •
  • This energy heats our planet by approximately 30
    degrees Celsius.
  •
  • This heat is what allows life on earth to
    continue as it is now.

4
Description
5
Greenhouse Gases- 8.5.5
  • H20 Water
  • CO2 Carbon Dioxide
  • fermentation and respiration of living things
  • burning of fossil fuels
  • CH4 Methane
  • volcanoes, wetlands and things decaying
  • stomachs of livestock and coal mines
  • N2O Nitrous Oxide
  • digesting bacteria
  • fertilizers and burning fossil fuels

6
Absorbing Infrared- 8.5.6
  • The natural frequency of the greenhouse gas
    molecules is in
  • the infrared radiation range.  Because of this
    the infrared
  • radiation is absorbed by the molecules.
  •
  •
  •
  •

7
Absorption Graphs- 8.5.7
  •

8
Surface Heat Capacity Cs- 8.5.12
  •     Surface heat capacity is the energy required
to raise the temperature of a unit area of the
    planet's surface by one degree.
  •
  • Units Jm2K-1

9
Simple Energy Balance- 8.5.13
  • The change in the Earth's temperature over a
    period of time
  •
  • (incoming radiation intensity- outgoing radiation
    intensity)time
  •  surface heat capacity

10
Example Problem
  • Find the change in the Earths temperature over
the time period of 36 hours.
  •
  • Cs  4.186 J/gram K
  • time 36 hours
  • Incoming radiation intensity 51
  • Outgoing radiation intensity 4
  •
  •  (51-4) 36  404.2 K
  •         4.186
  •
  • Problems with these problems There is no way of
knowing the specific heat to the earth.
