Ironbound Athletic FieldArtificial Turf
Investigation
  • Elevated level of lead detected by NJDHSS at the
    ball field
  • NJDHSS Requested EPA Assistance
  • Multimedia Sampling performed by EPA On November
    1, 2007
  • Sampling and Analysis Support by EPA/ERT
    Contractor (Lockheed)

Ironbound Athletic FieldMultimedia sampling
  • On Site XRF Analysis for Lead
  • Soil sampling- 19 samples
  • Artificial Turf Sampling
  • Dust samples Vacuum five samples
  • Turf
  • Mats-two layers five samples of each layer
  • Turf ( fibers with backing)- five samples
  • Residue between Mat and Turf- 2 samples

Ironbound Athletic FieldSoil and Residue Sample
analysis results ( mg/kg)
  • Soil Sample Lead Analysis Results
  • XRF ND to 73 20
  • ICP 4.1 to 29.7
  • Soil Samples PCB Analysis Results
  • PCB detected a two locations (6P and 7P) 0.041
    and 0.027
  • Residue (2) Lead Sample Analysis
  • ICP 196 and 270
  • Composite Residue PCB Sample Analysis
  • 0.085

Ironbound Athletic FieldMat Sample (17-T)
analysis results ( mg/kg)
  • Mat layer one Photo- front and back view
  • ICP Pb 3.55 to 16.30
  • Mat Layer two- photo- front and back similar
    view

Artificial Turf
11
Ironbound Athletic FieldSample Lead Analysis
Results ( mg/kg)
  • Turf with backing
  • ICP 3928 115
  • Turf fibers only
  • XRF 3964 60
  • ICP 4840 150
  • White Fibers from Backing
  • ICP 96.0

12
Artificial Turf Investigation
  • Two artificial turf golf mats were purchased
  • Mat 1 dimension three feet by five feet
  • Fibers are forest green demonstrated in slide 5
  • Mat 2 dimension one feet by two feet
  • Fibers are green and thicker than Mat 1
  • Mats 1, and 2 ( fibers and backing) were analyzed
separately for lead (Pb) using standard EPA/ERT
    methods for soils.

13
Premium Golf Mat 1 3X5 and Mat 2
1X2(Front)
Fibers Pb 6870 mg/kg (ICP) 5100 mg/kg (XRF)
Fibers Pb 9020 mg/kg (ICP) 5675 mg/kg (XRF)

Ironbound Athletic FieldInvestigation Conclusions
  • Multimedia samples were collected and analyzed at
    EPA/ERT/REAC Laboratory
  • Contacted Artificial turf manufacture to obtain
    information and sample of turf
  • On Site XRF analysis was performed for lead
  • The investigation revels that the Artificial Turf
is the source of Pb at the Athletic Field based
    on various analysis
  • The finding were presented by Region to city
  • The City is in process of replacing with the new
    turf
