Title: Sy Syms School of Business Inf Info Session

1
Sy Syms School of BusinessInf Info Session
  • Where an educated student is our best customer

2
Understanding the INF concentration
  • 12 courses (36 credits) business core
  • 7 courses in one of two tracks
  • Programming
  • Systems Administration
  • Minor any 5 courses (for Sy Syms majors only)

3
What does a programmer do?
  • Plans and codes new programs (software
    engineering)
  • Tests (QA) existing or new programs
  • Revises (updates) existing code with new
    functionality and features

4
What does a system administrator do?
  • Creates and maintains computer networks (data
    communication and troubleshooting)
  • Supports and trains staff to effectively use
    computers
  • Repairs and updates machines within a company
  • Administrates data security

5
Overlap Areas
  • Databases and database programming
  • Web (authoring, mastering?) and web programming
  • Network programming and scripting

6
Why do I need both a C.S. and an INF major?
  • Maybe you dont
  • Different stresses
  • CS is more math based
  • CS has 10 courses in the major, the INF major has
7 (34 in CS versus 21 credits in INF)
  • INF has more of a business component (the
    business core requirements)

7
Sample CS course of study
  • Intro to computers (similar to C 1 but 4
    credits, not 3)
  • Data structures (similar to C 2 but more
    in-depth)
  • Discrete Math (math concepts in programming)
  • Algorithmic Analysis (analyzing which program
    works better)
  • Programming Languages (Java, C, Ada, Prolog)
  • Computer Theory
  • Operating Systems
  • Hardware Principles
  • 2 additional electives
  • 2 Semesters Calculus, Linear Algebra

8
Programming Track Sample Course of Study
  • C for Business 1 and 2
  • Systems Analysis 1 and 2
  • Database Design
  • 2 INF Electives
  • (Business Internship allowed for one business
    elective)

9
Systems Admin Track Sample Course of Study
  • C for Business 1 and 2
  • Data Telecommunications
  • Systems Administration
  • Systems Security
  • 2 INF Electives
  • (Business Internship allowed for one business
    elective)

10
Comparing the two tracks
  • Both have 2 semesters of C
  • Only differ by 3 courses (with 2 electives
    allowed)
  • Possible to complete both tracks with only one
    additional course!

11
Does it matter which I choose?
  • A definite maybe
  • Graduate Programs often favor one versus the
    other
  • A CS grad degree needs more programming
    experience
  • An INF major helps for an MBA and business
    environments
  • Often graduates of both programs work side-by-side

12
Conclusions
  • Offer required classes more often than electives
    (telecomm next semester)
  • Revise class names and prereqs in next semesters
class (Web Programming and Computer Technology)
  • Create new classes (such as network programming)
  • Revise track requirements
