Baal Asherah
According to ancient mythology, Asherah, the
mother goddess, was the wife of El and mother of
seventy gods, of whom Baal was the most famous.
Asherah was the fertility goddess of the
Phoenicians and Canaanites. She was called Lady
Asherah of the Sea.
Supreme Lord of the Canaanites. Baal was
worshiped as the god who provided fertility.
Baal means lord, owner, possessor, or
husband. Baal at times appears in compound forms
indicating locations where his idols were
worshiped, such as Baal-peor, Baal-hermon and
Baal-gad
In Israel, Baal was served in Israel by 450
priests (1 Ki 1819), as well as by prophets (2
Ki 1019), and his worshippers wore special
vestments when his ritual was performed (2 Ki
1022). The offerings made consisted of incense
(Jer 79) and burnt sacrifices on extraordinary
occasions the victim was human (Jer 195). At
times the priests worked themselves into a state
of ecstasy, and dancing round the altar slashed
themselves with knives (1 Ki 1826, 28).
