    Customer Service, Manufacturing and Building

  • Specialist Nautical Campus - international
  • National Gaming Academy with North Warwickshire
    and Greenwich
  • Blackpool 13th most deprived in England
  • Significant Art and Design HE reputation 400
    FTE traditional 18 year old

GROWTH IN HE
  • Decline since 1999 FT HE
  • Last 2 years growth with new FDs
  • Construction and Engineering still resistant -
    like HNDs - but some movement (skills not
    thinking)
  • Soft FDs very popular (Comms at Work) the
    hankered after a degree market but perceive
    cannot fit around lifestyle. FT is not 37 hrs per
    week
  • Then the Hons top up cross sell

THE EMPLOYER DIMENSION
  • Obviously mandatory for new FD development
  • Employer support tends to be the larger
    organisations within a sector (then the rest
    follow) e.g. BAE, Leyland Truck
  • FE well placed in this area. T2G versus community
    agenda and used to high volume placements and
    delivery
  • HEI opportunity in the post-graduate progression
    and income stream/ ticks WP boxes

FD AWARDING POWERS
  • BFC cant rule anything out risk
  • Lancaster University major partner and the brand
    relationship and reputation very effective e.g.
    the BAE contract was competitive with another
    college but effectively between Lancaster brand
    and another HEI.
  • Brand value more important for major employers
    top up accreditation and post-graduate
    opportunities?

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER
  • Not significant on college radar but aware of
    significance within Lancaster and the college
    benefits (volunteer unit, web developer)
  • HE in FE role could be wider but brokerage more
    interesting. FE relationships with employers vast
    and active at the coal face
  • Exciting mentoring by Lancaster Volunteer Unit
    (KTP) with failed Apprentices another world
    out there

  • Extend our reach whilst playing to our strengths

  • University (Open University, youth halls,
    research, academic, vocational poly proposition,
    in company delivery, mature PT)

BREAK UP THE OFFER
  • 10m university campus centralised offer in town
    centre (regeneration catalyst)
  • Halls of residence
  • Separately branded and positioned (St Andrews on
    the beach, Everyone knows your face and
    probably your name)
  • Management development suite (specific curriculum
    department underpins most voc HE curriculum
    therefore collaborate between areas)
  • The aspirational yet achievable top of the
    mountain

A COMMUNICATION FUTURE
  • FE web presences were at best average before Web2
    (see what are we?)
  • Focus not on electronic presentation but
    electronic conversation
  • Drupal CMS feeding web but also internal document
    management. The backbone of Yahoo
  • Helps feed Moodle as VLE serious learning
  • Moodle links with Elgg for social learning and
    enrichment (your lecturer in the SU bar)
  • Elgg potential for involving parents, employers,
    peer to peer staff, peer to peer student, feeder
    high schools and colleges.
  • Grow our own relationships from the primary
    sector up
  • Brighton University, Leeds University, New
    Zealand, California consortium of schools, Open
    University
