Valparaíso Complex Systems Institute ISCV
Valparaíso Chile2006
2
Its a long history of an emergent discipline,
thereafter a Complex Systems Institute in
Valparaíso, Chile.
  • 1976 Some of the ISCV associate researchers were
trained in France and UK, in Theoretical Computer
    Science More precisely, Cellular Automata,
Neural Networks, Systems Biology and other
    Complex Systems.
  • 1985-up today Training of young students in PhD.
programs in Chile, France, UK, Germany and USA,
    in disciplines related with complexity.

  • 2001 The Chilean President declares Valparaisos
old historical quarters as a priority to develop
    culture, information technologies and related
    sciences.
  • 2002 Beginning of the first talks, in order to
create an Institute for Complex Systems in
    Valparaíso. Local Government, private companies
and the National Navy were interested in
    collaboration.
  • January 2003 First Complex Systems Summer School
    in Valparaíso.
  • 2003 Historic Quarter of the Seaport City of
Valparaíso is declared World Cultural Heritage
by UNESCO - Valparaíso is an exceptional
testimony to the early phase of globalisation in
the late 19th century, when it became the leading
merchant port on the sea routes of the Pacific
    coast of South America.
  • January 2004 Second Complex Systems Summer
    School in Valparaíso.

4
  • 2004 The National Navy, provide us with a 30
years loan of a nice 100 year old historical
house (about 500 square meters) in the
    Artillería Hill of Valparaíso.
  • June 2004 Financial support given by a private
Chilean copper company provided to refurbish the
    house and some basic administration.
  • January 2005 Third Complex Systems Summer School
in Valparaíso, supported by the European Complex
    Systems Network of Excellence EXYSTENCE.
  • 2005 A variety of lectures, seminars and
significant activities were held on the ISCV
during this year all these have attracted a vast
amount of scientists and researchers from a wide
