Introduction
  • Charity week began in 2004 as a ULU ISoc Project,
    in co-ordination with Islamic Relief.
  • Its primary aim was to help bring about unity
    among Muslim students.
  • In the first year about 33,000 was raised.
  • Alhamdulillah, CW was even more successful in the
    next 2 years, raising approximately 133,000 and
    180,000 respectively.
  • It is now a national event!!! In co-ordination
    with FOSIS.
  • ISocs in Australia have taken part this year.

Charity Week for Orphans 2007
Why CW?
  • Raising money for Orphans
  • Increased awareness of the State of the Ummah
  • Appeals to non-practising brothers/ sisters
  • Maximising the potential of Ramadan
  • Opportunity for passive active Dawah
  • Coordinated Muslim student activity all across
    London

Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by
night and by day. In secret and in public, have
their reward with their Lord on them shall be no

Where the money went
  • We have helped orphans in 9 different countries,
    spanning 3 continents.
  • We have built/aided 4 orphanages'.
  • 2004 Orphanage in Mandera, Kenya.

  • 2005
  • Sponsored 100 orphans, for 3 years in Pakistan.
  • Maintained an orphanage in Somalia catering for
    200 girls.
  • Gave Eid gifts to 625 Ethiopian orphans.

  • 2006
  • Extended and refurbished the school in Mandera,
    Kenya.
  • Palestine Orphans Day A day out, with gifts
    etc. for orphans in Palestine.
  • Paid the rent for an orphanage in Mali (they were
    going to be kicked out).
  • Built a health clinic for 2000 orphans at The
    Centre of Hope in Mali.
  • Built an orphanage in coxs bazaar, Bangladesh.

  • Date 2-5pm Wed 10th Oct 2007
  • Address 2nd Floor, Goodge Street Mosque (closest
    Tube Goodge Street Northern Line, also
    Tottenham Court Road and Warren Street Stations)
  • Youll get all your buckets, t-shirts, permits
    etc.
  • There will be an assembly line, iA.
  • Send brothers/sisters at a convenient time.
  • A good opportunity to pick meet the team and get
    advice/help

  • Collections after both Jumuahs in Charity Week
  • Regular collections after lectures from
    lecturers
  • Regular collections in the Students Union, on
    campus halls
  • Collect from your friends, family and relatives
  • Collect at local businesses and restaurants
  • Collect at local mosques (warning!)
  • Try some of the fun ways listed below
  • Use your imagination!!!
  • Whatever it takes (all within halaal limits of
    course!)

    in the ISoc to organise this. Everyone LOVE Pro

  • Make and Sell Stuff
  • Pashminas, eid cards, jewellery etc
  • Mosque Collections
  • Go to your locals for taraweeh and juma
    collections (outside ramadaan)
  • Get a letter off us or theyll think youre
    frauds.
  • Juma Collections
  • Make sure you do these at your university Juma.
  • Bungee Jump (ask me for more details)
  • Sponsor - Traditional Clothes Day (i.e. brs in
    Lungees)
  • Sponsored Silence

CW07 Alumni Scheme
  • Get a minimum of 20 alumni (10 brothers and 10
    sisters) to donate a minimum of 100.
  • All it requires is a list to be made, and a
    generous brother and sisters with free minutes.
  • Do it now during ramadaan.
  • Be persuasive students usually give more!!!
  • Get them to send cheques payable to Islamic
    Relief OR they can donate online via the
    following link
  • www.justgiving.com/charityweekfororphans
  • Its an easy 2000.

Charity Iftaars/Dinners
  • Try and get the best priced food for dinners.
  • For iftaar, try and get restaurants to donate the
    food for free.
  • Most effective if you have an auction!!!
  • Auction anything from samosas and dates to art
    work made by students.
  • Can also sell cakes i.e. the infamous mango cake
    or cakes made by brothers.
  • AUCTION RULES - Whatever you bid you pay,
    regardless if you win or loose!
  • GKT had there iftaar auction on Monday, they
    raised over 8000.

Street Tube Collections
  • As mentioned above, you need to start filling in
    you rotas now.
  • Juma and Iftaar times are the best time to get
    people to sign up, so make use of the remaining
    days of ramadaan.
  • Dont settle for Ill sign up tomorrow,
    inshaAllah, Get people committed.
  • Take numbers in case they go awol.
  • A reminder via phone the day before helps.
  • Try and catch the rush hour by sending people
    from 6/7am.
  • On the day, upon arrival every new collector
    should contact the station manager (ask if you
    can make announcement on the PA)

Street Tube Collections
  • Maker sure you always have a copy of the permit
    and your uni ID Card.
  • For National Rail and Street Collections, wear
    your Islamic relief sticker badges with your name
    and the date.
  • Make sure all sisters are accompanied by
    brothers, but no unnecessary interaction!!!
  • All collectors should be over 18.
  • DO NOT send more people than you have been
    allocated.
  • And BEHAVE or else we wont ever get permission
    again.
  • Use you discretion!!!

  • WE NEED YOU TO MAKE A NOTE OF HOW MUCH YOU RAISED
    AT EACH STATION AND BOROUGH
  • WE NEED YOU TO GIVE US YOUR ROTAS FOR THE STREET
    COLLECTION (i.e. NAMES OF COLLECTORS.
  • WITH THE AMOUNT EACH INDIVIDUAL RAISED
  • AND THE TOTAL YOUR ISOC RAISED ON THE DAY
  • SO PLEASE TAKE GOOD RECORDS
  • THERE WONT BE A CW NEXT YEAR IF YOU DONT!!!

DOs DO be polite at all times, even in
stressful situations   DO dress modestly when
collecting in public!    DO make sure you have a
copy of the collection permit at all times!   DO
report to station managers when collecting at
train or tube (before and after please!)    DO
report any threatening or abusive behaviour to
your relevant team leaders.   DO make an effort
to smile and be approachable - you are
representing Islam!   DO remind donors that we
help both Muslim and Non-Muslim orphans. DO keep
it legal and halal!!!
DONTs DONT forget to have unbroken seals
(stickers) on your buckets and penny
boxes. DONT collect in areas without permission
or against rules.   DONT engage in any
confrontational or violent behaviour.   DONT
ignore warnings from the police or station
managers.   DONT collect on train or tube
carriages.   DONT count collection money in
public.   DONT EVER take the money out of the
bucket in public.   DONT collect on your
own.   DONT carry large amounts of money
around.

  • Keep your total secret, even from your own.
  • You can send the money in by cheques made payable
    to Islamic Relief.
  • Cheques MUST have charity week for orphans 2007
    and the name of your University on the back .
  • If your ISoc is specifying a country then add
    this to the back also.

Buckets
  • Please return all buckets and penny boxes from
    this year and from previous years BEFORE THE
    ANNUAL DINNER.
  • "Any Islamic Society which has not returned their
    penny boxes and buckets to Islamic Relief
    Headquarters, or to one of our designated drop of
    points (to be confirmed soon) in time for the
    Annual Dinner, will have 50 and 100 PER PENNY
    BOX and BUCKET respectively deducted from there
    final total as a penalty fine. This money will
    be collated and added to the Charity Week
    countdown under the title 'ISoc's which were
    unable to hand in their buckets'. Furthermore, we
    would appreciate it if we could have all buckets
    and penny boxes from past charity weeks returned,
    they do not belong to your Isoc's, THEY BELONG TO
    A CHARITY."
