3
Simplifying Fractions
  • A fraction is in simplest form if the GCF of the
    NUMERATOR and DENOMINATOR is 1!

4
Simplifying Fractions
  • 1) Complete a factor tree or make a list of
factors for the numerator and denominator!
  • 2) Find the GCF!
  • 3)Divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF!

5
Improper Fractions
  • In most cases the numerator is smaller than the
    denominator.
  • However, in some fractions the numerator is
    actually larger than the denominator.
  • These fractions are called improper fractions.
  • Answers should never be in improper form.

6
Mixed Numbers
  • Since answers should never be improper we must
discuss how to change improper fractions to a
    mixed number.
  • A mixed number is a mixture of whole numbers and
    fractions.

7
Examples
  • An example of an improper fraction would be 15/2.
  • An example of a mixed number would be 2 1/2

8
Changing Forms
  • Some problems require improper fractions in order
to solve, but your answer cannot be improper.

9
Mixed to Improper
  • To change a mixed number to an improper fraction
is as simple as multiplying and adding.
  • Multiply the whole number and the denominator
together, and add the numerator to that product.
