2Objectives
- The primary objective of the project is to
develop and evaluate easy to use, adaptable
software which simplifies access to geographical
information and correlated multimedia resources. - the project also aims to illustrate how the ideas
can be readily adapted to other problem domains.
3Consortium
- Agence de Coop. de L'EUROPE DE LA MER (ACEM)

4User Requirements
- To visualise different types of information from
different sources in a common reference frame - To understand how the information has changed or
may change with time - To share information, particularly where other
agencies add value or enhance the information in
some way - To protect the information
Application oriented - the users are not
concerned with where the information comes from
or how it arrives at the desktop
5Scenarios
- Dredging
- Visualise sediment shift for efficient direction
of dredging operations - Determine appropriate areas for dumping of waste
- Ultimate aim to reduce lead time on hydrographic
chart production - Environmental
- Preparation of emergency response plans
- Visualisation of ecologically sensitive areas -
thematic organisation of information to enable
different threats to be assessed - GIS functionality to enhance basic information
- Business
- Access to up-to date infrastructure and dynamic
information - Real time vessel information, including berthing
and loading information - Service information, eg custom forms or tourist
information.

7Current Status
- Prototype being installed at user sites
- Technology demonstrators exploring complementary
approaches - Six month evaluation
- Some lessons emerging
- population of databases is a key issue
- map interface intuitive for users - provides a
common platform between technologists and users
8Evolution
- live access to dynamic databases via CORBA, JDBC
or the direct spatial database drivers (eg Oracle
Data Cartridges or Informix DataBlades ) - Tools to generate thematic products
- use the system to maintain the databases, so that
a user can update the information store from the
browser - extending the range of applications which can
operate on the vector data. Examples of this
might be models to predict pollutant behaviour,
or statistical analysis - mapping data types other than spatial data, such
as a network diagram or business process
schematics.
