What is a geocentric system?

Ptolemy

• Greek astronomer
• Felt that the Earth was at the center of the
  solar system, but felt that planets moved on
  little circles that moved on bigger circles.
• He felt this explained why planets seen to move
  through the sky at different speeds and sometimes
  even backwards.

Copernicus

• Polish astronomer
• He developed a solar system model where the sun
  is at the center.
• Heliocentric System
• Helios means sun

Galileo

• Italian Astronomer
• He believed that the heliocentric model was
  correct.
• He used a telescope to support the idea of the
  heliocentric model.
• He saw that Venus had phases like Earths moon
  and he also saw Jupiter with moons.

Kepler

• German mathematician
• He determined that the orbit of the planets is an
  ellipse (oval) not a circle.

Inertia and Gravity

• Inertia and gravity work together to keep the
  planets in orbit.
• Inertia is the tendency of a moving object to
  continue in a straight line or a stationary
  object to remain in place.
• The more mass an object has the more inertia it
  will have.
