1
IP Panel What is This? What are we Doing?
  • Toni Alonso
  • Global Video Initiatives Manager
  • Pfizer Inc
  • May 22, 2001

2
Where Is Video Today?
  • It uses ISDN and switched 56 - a 40 year old
technology that has standards variations from
    country to country.
  • Bandwidth is expensive and cost conscience Users
will use the minimum bandwidth despite the
    quality issues.
  • Success rates run the gamut from 50 to 95
success - no rhyme or reason for this.
  • Collaboration is non-existent.

3
What Do Users Want?
  • Many people are complaining about the quality of
    video today.
  • Why doesnt it look like TV - isnt that what I
    am looking at?
  • Why cant we use IP and our data network,
    wouldnt it be less expensive?
  • I want to use it now - everyone is advertising
    it.
  • The need to share and truly collaborate in a
    global environment.

4
What Are We (Pfizer) Doing?
  • Pilot for 5 campuses/3 rooms each for a total of
    15 sites.
  • IP in group rooms - 1.5mbps guaranteed to each
    room.
  • Trialing each top three (3) codec company, i.e.
    PictureTel, Polycom, Tandberg.
  • Three (3) months solid (7/2/01 - 9/30/01).
  • Requesting users to complete short on-line survey
    regarding quality.
  • Conducting a focused RFP on the codec
    manufacturers.

5
What Are We Doing?
  • Separate data network through Global Crossing for
    pilot.
  • Implemented network management to the router.
  • Each system has backup ISDN in the event IP
network fails - no impact to User.
  • Only charging Users for port usage and not
    transport charges.

6
Frustrations/Learning Experience
  • Everyone claims they have a service - not true.
  • You are dealing with different parts of various
    organizations - bridging, network, etc.
  • You must accept being a guinea pig and know
that you are a PIONEER in this arena.
  • Need to let your management know that this is new
technology and we are bleeding edge there will
    be some pitfalls. Equipment/service is
    constantly evolving.

7
How Can You Be Successful?
  • Must have Executive/Senior management support or
    mandate.
  • Involve many colleagues/businesses to ensure they
have a stake in the outcome.
  • Work with your partners/vendors let them know
this is a win-win scenario and each learns from
    the other.
  • Detail project management live breathe it.
  • Be realistic.

8
How Can You Be Successful?
  • Do things in phases, i.e., 1.5mbps immediately,
    half way through data collaboration.
  • Involve the right people, focus on your expertise
and delegate to others with different strengths.
  • Get things for free!!!
  • Communicate, communicate, communicate.

9
How Can You Be Successful?
  • Pray.
  • Light candles.
  • Think positively.
  • Eat chocolate.
  • Exercise to relieve stress (and not gain weight
    from chocolate).
  • Breathe, breathe, breathe.
  • Talk to your peers who are doing this - you are
not alone. Get a sanity check.
